A Tenured Professor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Tenured Professor (1990) is a satirical novel by Canadian/American economist and Professor Emeritus at Harvard John Kenneth Galbraith about a liberal university teacher who sets out to change American society by making money and then using it for the public good.
Set at Harvard mainly during the Reagan administration, the plot and all the characters that appear in the story are entirely fictitious.
The book chronicles the rise to fame of one Montgomery Marvin, a professor of economics who, as an academic teacher, keeps a low profile but who nevertheless is given tenure quite early in his career.

Professor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The reason for the existence of tenure is the principle of academic freedom, which holds that it is beneficial for state, society, and academe in the long run if professors are free to hold and advance controversial views without fear of losing their jobs.
Professor by courtesy: a professor who is primarily and originally associated with one academic department, but has become officially associated with a second department, institute, or program within the university and has assumed a professor's duty in that second department as well.
Typically, such a professor may be invaluable to his university department in procuring research funding and/or in publishing scholarly works, and therefore the department would prefer that he not distract himself with teaching duties that are not directly linked to his research activities.

The rank of Professor should be awarded to those outstanding faculty members who show an ability to sustain high quality research and/or teaching and/or leadership that is widely recognized by their peers.
These criteria and standards shall assure that the granting of tenure is based on evidence of (1) teaching excellence; (2) a record of professional creativity, such as research or other accomplishments appropriate to the discipline; and (3) service to the University, to the faculty member's profession, or professional service to the public.
In most cases, in order to qualify for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate achievements that are judged to be excellent in at least one of the areas of research, teaching, or extension, and must have shown significant accomplishment in one of the remaining two areas.
