Theatre Review - A Thousand Clowns   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A Thousand Clowns, by Herb Gardner, currently playing on the Kirkwood Theatre Guild stage, is a script dear to my heart.
It is filled with dark wit, slyly funny, with a kind of gentle meanness at it's core.
A Thousand Clowns is the story of Murray Burns, played here by Jim Danek, a depressed, out of work television writer who has just quit his pathetic job writing for the Chuckles the Chippermonk children's show.

Talkin' Broadway Review: A Thousand Clowns   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Herb Gardner’s A Thousand Clowns, the current revival of which opened last night at the Longacre Theatre, is now 39 years old and showing its age.
Clowns was, in the early 60s, a rather avant guard comedy about “a nonconformist uncle who is raising his precocious nephew in his own unique way” (a way which guarantees the inevitable intervention by the Child Welfare Board) and included the mandatory dismissal of paid employment as a valid lifestyle.
Having said that, Clowns is a good example of a well made play and Gardner’s construction remains strong enough to hold together and provide a somewhat interesting evening at the theatre even with this lackluster revival.

While Coe was known as a kind and good man, still, the opportunity for revenge on the generation of bean-counters and advertising agency executives who had colonized his beloved medium was clearly just too good to pass up.
The film's most spectacular character is Gene Saks' "Chuckles," a television kids-show clown of the type that had become ubiquitous by 1965, and which, for Coe, was a symptom of the cancer of lowbrow taste that was attacking television.
Murray's patent disdain for the mind-rotting drivel that television had become - he is sent on some duty interviews by the young reformers - was certainly Coe's, as well.

Playbill News: Independence Day: A Thousand Clowns Starts at Bway's Longacre, July 4
Clowns was supposed to come to Broadway this past season, but the timeframe was scotched owing to a lack of available Broadway houses.
In a story about plans for Clowns, the New York Times noted (Feb. 25, 2000) that Selleck had talked to Gardner about doing the show back in 1996, but that was just when the Roundabout Theatre Company had put their Broadway production together, one that starred Judd Hirsch and Marin Hinkle.
A Thousand Clowns has an especially nostalgic tinge these days, since Murray Burns was originally played by the late Jason Robards, who repeated the role in the 1965 film.

MMI Movie Review: A Thousand Clowns
This movies inspires dramatic reactions from people, who either support the working man machine and regard the self-indulgences of Murray's character as an arrogant clown to people who this movie re-affirms the struggle that all non-conformists face of being true to themselves and yet working along with the machine enough to survive.
Regardless of your philosophy, this movie's energy is infectious, and presents a picture postcard view of Manhattan in the 1960's that deserves to be seen and preserved.
Unfortunately, as its years out of print, the only way you are likely to see "A Thousand Clowns" today is if your hip film school professor shows it to you in class, or a sweet girl tracks down a copy on eBay for you.
