A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE is a love story of a troubled marriage between a working class man, Nick (played movingly by Peter Falk), and his wife Mabel (played with brilliant attention to emotional nuance by Gena Rowlands).
Gena Rowlands as Mabel manages luminously to capture the strangeness of madness, a woman manically talking and grimacing to herself, angrily gesticulating to strangers in the street, and punctuating her speech with incongruous raspberries.

There's nothing to do with the dreams of women, or of woman as the dream, nothing to do with the quirky part of her, the wonder of her.

For Cassavetes, A Woman Under the Influence was a peak in terms of mainstream attention and critical respect, a product of its stealthy accessibility and of the progressiveness of American cinema culture in the early Seventies.
After all, this is a film that treats its first fifty minutes like a preamble, a constantly rolling narrative without discernible shape or sustained conflict, with dozens of unnamed characters moving through confusing, unestablished spaces and then, at who knows what hour of the day, gathering to eat spaghetti in the bedroom.

John Cassavettes’s A Woman under the Influence shows us a man and a woman who are desperately dysfunctional, each in their own way, but makes no attempt to explain their behavior.
What you get out of any movie is what you bring to it: Woman is not about a specific plot, but simply about these two people, and the more you know about life the more you’ll see what you know reflected in what’s going on.
The woman is Mabel Longhetti (Gena Rowlands), a mother of three and wife to Nick (Peter Falk), a work-gang foreman.

Many influences are apparent in Lerner's film: Roman Polanski (especially "Repulsion," "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Tenant"); Dario Argento, the Italian maker of horror films; the low-budget horror films that were produced in the United States in the 1960s.
But this abundance of influences, which might have come across as mere copycatting by an educated and diligent student, does not weigh on the film; on the contrary, it infuses the film in a richly complex way.

Gena Rowlands's performance as Mabel Longhetti, a blue collar housewife collapsing under the weight of mental illness, is the single most painful experience of my film-watching life.
His brand of cinema verite forces us to look on helplessly, passively, as if we were just a few more strangers in Mabel's life, a few more strangers who refuse to stand up for her.
The whole piece is worth a read (as is much of the other writing collected at his site), but I think Carney is at his best when he talks about the incestuous relationship between art, academia, and the cultural forces that shape critical opinion.

One of the most overused examples of so-called "chick flicks" are when a woman (or women) come up against some kind of crisis, and take some kind of journey in response to, or because of, that crisis.
I say overused because often these types of movies indulge in the hoariest cliches associated with "chick flicks." It's true, of course, that movies about men taking journeys can also be cliched, but they're hoary in different ways.

John Cassavetes's long, free-form drama is best appreciated as a good showcase for Gena Rowlands, playing a woman whose sanity literally appears to be shattering as different aspects of her personality eclipse others at various times.
John Casavettes directs "A Woman Under the Influence" with a naturalness (a Casavettes hallmark) that seems as if he were making a documentary film about his own family.
As many probably know, Gena Rowlands was married to Casavettes and he utilized her in many of his films, all to his and his audience's great advantage.
