Troitzky line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Troitzky (or Troitsky) line is a key motif in chess endgame theory in the rare and practically unimportant (but theoretically interesting) ending of two knights versus a pawn.
Part 2: the second Troitzky line solved the winning line taking into account the 50-move rule, and more winning techniques and drawing zones.
This is due to the fact that a common technique in this endgame is that of reducing the defending king to a position that would be a stalemate except for an available pawn move, and allowing the pawn to move can allow the attacking knights to move in for the kill.

Troitzky died of starvation during the siege of Leningrad during World War Two, and his papers and analysis were not recovered.
Troitzky's analysis showed that some of these endgames could not be won in less than 50 moves.
He discovered the winning procedure, which is to block the pawn with one knight, use the other knight and the king to corner the opponent's king, and then using the blocking knight to deliver checkmate.

This is the Troitzky Board, derived from the standard board by removing the four corner cells and inserting two cells in the middle of each edge.
Geometrically this means that a line can be drawn through (x, y) to meet the x and y axes at points whose coordinates are rational numbers (0, j/k) and (j/h, 0), except when h or k are 0 in which case the line is parallel to the x or y axis.
The angle between the lines from the centre to the middle of the cells numbered 12 and 1 is arctan 3/5 which is about 30.96 degrees.
