Gilbert Company, American Flyer was initially an independent company whose origins date back nearly a half century earlier.
Gilbert re-designed the product line and is popularly credited with creating the O27 variant of O gauge in 1939, in which the locomotive and car bodies are scaled to 1:64 scale, making them approximately 25% smaller than the 1:48 standard for O gauge, while still running on the same type of track.

Gilbert's original rival Meccano Company (now Meccano Toys Ltd.) acquired the rights to the Erector Set after 1962, and still sells them today.
He called it the Erector Set, and the A. Gilbert Company sold 30 million of them.
Gilbert began selling the "Mysto Erector Structural Steel Builder" in 1913, backed by the first major American ad campaign for a toy.

 AC Gilbert Company - Dolls 1965
The doll books I have, do not list a Gilbert Toy Company, so I assume that this is the AC Gilbert Company that sold trains and erector sets so popular with boys, that began in 1909-1967.
died in 1961 and the company was sold to the Gabriel Company in 1967.

In 1921, flush with the success of its Erector Sets and other popular toys, the A. Gilbert Company joined the kiddie-record fray with its Bobolink phonographs and records.
By early 1922, A. had disposed of his record business to his brother, F.W. Gilbert, president and treasurer of the LaVelle Manufacturing Company.
The company seemed determined to undermine its competition, retailing Cameo-Kid for a mere 15¢ each, a challenge that was answered almost immediately with Plaza's introduction of the 15¢ Playtime label.

After the elder Gilbert's death in 1956, the company tried to keep pace with changing times but even with space age additions to the product line, could not compete with television, the Beatles and the transistor.
The Gilbert company produced not only Erector sets, but a complete line of chemistry and scientific sets as well as his American Flyer line of model trains.
Soon, the mechanical construction toy would eclipse the magic business and the A. Gilbert Company (he bought out his partners in the predecessor Mysto Manufacturing Company) would achieve world wide fame with the talented and outgoing Gilbert at the helm for nearly 50 years.
