Alfred Ayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ayer's sense-data theory in Foundations of Empirical Knowledge was famously criticised by fellow Oxonian J.
Ayer was closely associated with the British humanist movement.
Ayer (or Freddie by his friends), was a British philosopher known for his promotion of logical positivism, particularly in his books Language, Truth and Logic (1936) and The Problem of Knowledge (1956).

Ayer explains that the principle of verifiability may be used as a criterion to determine whether or not a statement is meaningful.
Ayer is careful to explain that the verification principle is a definition of meaning, and that it is not an empirical proposition.

 Alfred Jules Ayer
In opposition to Price and others, Ayer argued that the idea that in sense perception we were not immediately presented with material objects but rather sense data was not some fact about perception that we discovered on reflection, or a consequence of the argument from illusion.
Ayer argued that many of the traditional disputes of philosophy, for example realism vs idealism, monadology vs monism, turned out to be, to the extent that they could not be reconfigured as disputes about the analysis of statements in use or shown to be empirical issues, simply pseudo-problems.
Ayer outlined the now standard tripartite analysis of propositional knowledge as a matter of being sure of something that was true and that one had the right to be sure of.

 Alfred Jules Ayer
For Ayer it was clear that not all evidence for a statement was to be included in the meaning of the statement: a statement about the blood on Jack's jacket was not included in the meaning of the assertion that Jack was the murderer.
Even on Ayer's later view, called ‘sophisticated realism’(in Ayer 1973), where our perception of physical objects was indirect, the ‘ultimate basis for perceptual judgments were sense-data, which were now called ‘quale’ (or, if particularized, ‘percepts’).
That is, non-veridical perceptions could share their intrinsic properties with veridical perceptions, this possibility leading Ayer to claim that it was plausible that the object of perception in both cases was (non-material) experience, and not, as naïve realism would have it, the physical objects themselves.

 Alfred Ayer - Philos
A.J. Ayer is famed both for his work in logical positivism and for his later criticism of its limits.
While he favored a sort of "mild logical positivism" throughout his life, and despite some of his more extremist moments, Ayer criticized viewpoints that sought purely empirical or materialist explanations for the world, such as ordinary-language philosophy or radical behaviourism, just as he criticized religious explanations for the world.
Ayer moved away from a strict or "radical" logical positivism over the years, but he pretty much always held the view that religion was nonsense whenever it was not simply false.

 332. A. J. Ayer to Harrod, 2 December 1933
Ayer argues that while the usual answer to the problem of the existence of other minds than one's own is usually based on analogy, analogy can only render probable propositions that could be in principle established by direct observation, but not nonsensical (meaningless) conclusions: "The Case for Behaviourism", pp.
Ayer's argument begins with the characterization of two different theories of behaviorism in terms of their interpretations of behavior in terms of physical language or as physical phenomena: the "philosophical or logical theory of Behaviourism" is
Ayer's case for logical behaviourism rests on the necessity, for psychology, of "ridding itself of metaphysical accretions" in order to deserve the title of science (p.

 AyerbyQuinton
Ayer's main concern is with James's radical empiricism, which he sees as a rough, preliminary adumbration of his own account of empirical knowledge as composed of a primary system of sensible elements and a secondary system of theoretical constructions out of these elements (minds, common objects, the theoretical entities of physics).
His father was Jules Ayer, a French-speaking Swiss from Neufchatel, who had lived in England since coming here to join his mother at the age of seventeen.
Ayer's reply that it is analytic, a conventional proposal to define 'meaning' in a particular way, allowed those hostile to its implications m propose another convention, compatible with their preferences, as hc rather exhaustedly acknowledged.

Ayer recalled that she `would have liked to go to university, but my grandfather considered this a waste of time and money for girls and sent her instead to an art school for which she had no aptitude'.
Ayer never wrote about Dickens in any detail, but he returned to him again and again, and the novels are often a source of incidental reference in his philosophical writings.
Ayer could remember very little of his early childhood — he could recall almost nothing, for instance, of the schools he attended before he was seven.

He presents several simple, straightforward arguments for the rejection of metaphysics, labeling it 'nonsensical.' Ayer acknowledges the emotional content of speculative metaphysics, but argues that philosophers should not get caught up in arguing over semantically non-sensical propositions which are neither verifiable nor falsifiable.
Ayer covers a lot of familiar ground (e.g., Hume, Locke, etc), and argues for philosophers to concentrate on critical studies, rather than speculative metaphysics.
