The Motorway Archive. A1(M), Durham motorway
The Durham Motorway contract 3, Bowburn - Carrville, was obtained by French in April 1967, at a figure in the region of £3,500,000.
It comprised the construction of a further 4½ miles of the Durham Motorway from north of its junctions with the A177 at Bowburn to half a mile north of the two level interchanges with the A690 at Carrville.
This consideration, together with a desire to keep obstructions in the motorway to a minimum, resulted in a simply supported single span bridge of robust appearance, which reflects the workmanlike character of the region to visitors approaching from the South, and was in keeping with the semi-industrial nature of the mid-Durham countryside.

 UK Motorway Maps Secrets
Motorways are highways designed to carry a large volume of traffic where a normal road would not suffice or would be unsafe usually disjuncting bug cities.
The easiest thing to be caught from any of motorway UK maps is blue signage and an M-prefixed or suffixed road number, which is the very denotation of the motorway.
It is a frequent thing when these motorways are divided into some parts for traffic not wishing or not permitted to enter the motorway be able to escape route.

 Pathetic Motorways: A66(M)
For historical reasons its a great example of early motorway planning, being from like you say from the old fashioned days and you couldn't see it being built, at least to this standard, these days but thankfully it was.
When there are either problems on the A1(M) or events like races at Croft circuit the police tend to use the A66(M) to hold all the traffic, much better than it backing up on the A1 or A167.
My final comment would be that it does need improving by the provision of north facing slip roads onto the A1(M) to give a much better access out of from the south of Darlington to the north so you aren't forced to use the terrible A68 or A167 through the north of Darlington.

 Pathetic Motorways: A14(M) & A604(M)
I personally think that this road is an unnumbered spur of the A1(M), in a similar fashion to the exit off the M1 for Luton Airport - on the M1, there is junction 10, but at the end of the spur, the roundabout is numbered junction 10A.
It is not officially a motorway some may call it a spur of the A1(M) or a spur of the A604.
After the current A14 was built, but before this stretch of the A1 was upgraded to motorway, the A604 was a secret A road, or so I've been led to believe by a traffic engineer I spoke to at a party at the time.

 CBRD - Motorway Database - A1(M)
The roads plan in the 1960s came under fire because it wasn't committed to motorways, but instead to a combination of motorways and all-purpose roads.
Worst affected was the A1, which was almost all dualled and many sections grade-separated in the 1960s as far as Newcastle, but only a few bits were done as motorway and the rest as all-purpose road.
The road there was upgraded to dual two-lane standard with complete grade separation in the 1960s, but was constructed as cheaply as possible, and at current traffic levels is just much too dangerous.

The deputy prime minister granted planning permission for the construction of a new motorway service area on the A1(M) at Kirk Deighton in north Yorkshire accepting that there was a proven need.
The deputy prime minister agreed that there was a pressing need to meet the requirements of motorway users and it was important to ensure that services were provided at approximately every 50 kms.
In weighing the benefits and disbenefits of each scheme he decided that allowing the scheme to proceed at Kirk Deighton was to be preferred and granted outline planning permission for a service area including hotel, shops and restaurants.
