BBC - Cambridgeshire Have Your Say - Vent your spleen at the A14 - A14, Travel, Traffic and Transport Message Board
Each time there are "light" delays on the A14 (by which I mean the traffic flow suddenly slows from 70mph, to 50mph) it is caused by lorries overtaking lorries with a speed difference of 1mph.
I've been forced to travel on the A14 for two years now, its a very dangerous and busy road but by far the main cause of delays and accidents is the "professional" drivers who use it.
The M11 should be extended to the A1M and the A14 should have been made a motorway in the first instance.

What IS A14?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A14 came into existence during the Fall semester of 2000 at Stony Brook University in Cardozo College, located next to the pond in Roth Quad.
A14, the suite that we all lived and gathered in, quickly became a popular meeting spot as well as the central location of all A14 activities. With similar interests (particularly video games), we quickly began to have all sorts of group discussions and activities.
During the Spring semester of 2003, A14 expanded to A31 when Chris became the new RA of the floor.

 SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A14
Between Junctions 58 and 54 the A14 multiplexes with the A12 on the Ipswich bypass, crossing the Orwell by a high level bridge en route.
The A14 skirts to the north of Cambridge to reach the complex junction 31 with the M11, A428 and A1307.
From Junction 31 the A14 continues unremarkably to Godmanchester (Junction 24) where it crosses the A1198 (the original route of the A14), bypassing the town to junction 23 where the Alconbury spur continues as the straight ahead route, (using a flyover above the roundabout used by traffic on the main A14).

AERIAL ST- MODEL A14 TYPE 1400ec SERIES 990   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The A14 employed a reverse claw landing system (two claws rear, one forward) and much of its mass was situated in the tail assembly, giving it balance near the engines.
VTOL capacity and hover were retained, but the dual wing format allowed the A14 to obtain higher speeds, making it able to reach farther away to distant patrol zones and to provide protection and interception there.
The A14 was produced in greater numbers during the end of the War, even more so than the A4 was.

None of the pol I-specific subunits that are localized on the lips of the cleft (A49 and A34.5) or the pol I-specific stalk (A43 and A14) cross-link to DNA.
We show by immunoelectronic microscopy that A43, ABC23, and A14 colocalize in the three-dimensional structure of the pol I, and we demonstrate that the presence of A43 is required for the stabilization of both A14 and ABC23 within the pol I. Paper-9263953.
In this paper, using biochemical and genetic approaches, we demonstrate that the A43 polypeptide forms a stable heterodimer with the A14 pol I subunit and interacts with the common ABC23 subunit, the yeast counterpart of the omega subunit of bacterial RNA polymerase.

Quite aside from the fact that three arms of this four-way junction are numbered A14 (the fake one is the one to the north, which is a four mile spur to the A1 further north), this junction gets its priorities all wrong.
The A14 is a new road, but rather than being new build (aside from a few short bits) it's mostly cobbled together out of bits of other road.
Harwich and Felixstowe East Coast Ports via A14 are not signed until the southerly A1/A14 junction requiring traffic to use two roundabouts and a two mile detour rather than a simple Y junction [and adding to the congestion at this junction].

The Freight Transport Association says that the A14 from Felixstowe to the Midlands constitutes a key trade route, a major contributor to the UK economy, and should be improved to motorway standard as soon as possible.
The road is a vital link between the UK’s major container port, to the central motorway network in the Midlands and onwards to the west and the north.
There must be long term investment in the A14 – we must see it improved to motorway standard with three lanes.

The A14 (formerly A604) east-west trunk route skirts the northern edge of the city.
This is a major freight route connecting the port of Felixstowe on the east coast with the Midlands, North Wales, the west coast and Ireland.
This is particularly true of the section between Huntingdon and Cambridge where the east-west traffic is merged with the A1 to M11 north-south traffic on just a 2-lane dual carriageway.

BBC NEWS | England | Cambridgeshire | Options for A14 upgrade unveiled
The existing A14 around Huntingdon would be downgraded for use by local traffic and public transport only and the viaduct over the railway and Brampton Road would be demolished.
The second scheme would keep the existing A14 past Huntingdon as a dual carriageway trunk road, with a new route from Ellington to Fen Drayton as a two-lane dual carriageway.
The proposals for the A14 east of Fen Drayton are the same as the recommendations in the first scheme.

Currently the A14, a vital artery for Cambridgeshire and the UK, is over capacity and its widening has been identified as a vital component in coping with current and future development planned for the County.

As such, the A14 will have to have motorway restrictions back to its previous junction, especially if it's built without the roundabout.
The present A14 would have to be upgraded to motorway all the way to the A5199 (unless the A14-A5 link is built).
I would agree that most of the A14 should be converted to motorway, but not just because the only route for non-motorway traffic is around a roundabout - that kind of thinking gave us the A6144(M) and A601(M).
