A14 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A14 is a major road in England, running from the Port of Felixstowe to the junction of the M1 and M6 motorways near Rugby.
There are four at-grade junctions along the road: with the B663 at Bythorn in Cambridgeshire (junction 15); at the Leighton Bromswold turn a few kilometres to the east (junction 17); at the Haughley Bends West of Stowmarket in Suffolk (junction 48); and at the Dockspur Roundabout at the edge of Felixstowe (junction 60).
The road known as the A14 until the mid-90's is now the A1198 between Royston, Hertfordshire and Godmanchester but, confusingly, retains its A14 designation north of Godmanchester until it meets the A1 road near Alconbury; thus forming a 'spur' off the main A14.

The A14 is a major road in England, running from Felixstowe to the junction of the M1 and M6 motorways near Rugby.
Much of the route of the A14 was formerly part of the A45 road.
The section between Cambridge and Huntingdon (between junctions with the M11 and A1 respectively) is badly congested and in 2003 was the subject of a government study called CHUMMS (Cambridge to Huntingdon multi-modal study), which recommended a partial diversion, and widening of the whole section to three lanes.

When the Bedfordshire sub unit of the Eastern Road Construction Units was established its original design briefs included the M11 Cambridge Western Bypass, the A45 Cambridge Northern Bypass, the A45 Bury St Edmunds bypass and with a lowly priority the A45/A11 bypass of Newmarket.
The first sections to be built (now the A14) formed a route to the south of the town, from the London to Gt Yarmouth road (A12), across the River Orwell to an interchange with the former A45 (now A14), the road from Felixstowe to the Midlands, and the A12.
The remaining sections link the route with A14 on the western side of Ipswich and with A12 to the east of the town.

The A14 Trunk Road is a route of national strategic importance, which connects the east coast ports of Felixstowe and Harwich with the Midlands and the North.
The majority of the A14 is of a satisfactory modern standard, one of the few exceptions being the length between Haughley New Street and Stowmarket.
The objective of the scheme is to upgrade the standard of approximately 4km of the existing road to improve safety and reduce accidents.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys as there will be a 40 mph speed restriction on the approach to the London Road roundabout, traffic lights on the roundabout and a 10 mph convoy escort along lane 2 to the Brandon Road roundabout.

A1 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Improvements to the road north of Newcastle upon Tyne were planned where the road consists mostly of single carriageway sections as opposed to a combination of dual carriageway and motorway to the south.
This is the most recent upgrade of the road, which upgraded the previous two-lane dual carriageway, much of which was on a substandard alignment to a dual 3-lane motorway.
A proposal to replace the road with a parallel motorway between Baldock and Alconbury thus giving a continuous motorway to Peterborough, was dropped as too expensive, despite the very poor alignment and accident record on this section.

BBC - Cambridgeshire - Travel - The future of the A14
The A14 used to be called the A604 and served mostly local traffic before the completion of a link to the M1 turned it into a trans-European route and it became known as the A14.
The A14 has nine junctions in only 13 miles - that's an average of one junction every 1.5 miles - and a major cause of accidents and congestion.
Because the A14 is not a motorway, it has no hard shoulder, which means that broken down vehicles often cause a hazard and emergency vehicles find the road difficult to negotiate.

Highways Agency - A12/A14 Copdock Interchange Traffic Signals
Peak period congestion is a problem on all approaches to the interchange and of particular concern is the lengthier queuing problem and delays experienced by users of the A12 northbound approach.
This happens because the dominant traffic movements at the interchange are from the A12 northbound onto the A14 eastbound and into Ipswich and from the A14 eastbound to the A12 southbound – both are right-turning manoeuvres.
Whilst to some A14 road users this might be seen as a regressive step, an overall balance of the interchange can be achieved to the benefit of the majority.
