The road begins in the city of Newry, County Down and heads north-east through the fishing towns of Warrenpoint, Rostrevor and Kilkeel.
Along this stretch and further out the Shore Road, the main route is formed by the M3, M2 and M5, until the M5 ends in Newtownabbey in the northern suburbs of Belfast.
This section of the road closely follows the coast through the villages of Ballygalley, Glenarm, Carnlough, Waterfoot and Cushendall before leaving the coast, which it rejoins at Ballycastle.

The road will depart from the current route at Greenisland by going through where Russel's Cellars currently is at the junction with Station Road and rejoin the main route by demolishing and relocating the main entrance to the large police station.
A person who lives on the route told me that the Roads Service had in years gone by explored the idea of building the road on the sea side by reclaiming the beach, but that this idea was abandoned after uproar from the residents.
At the centre of the village, the number of mature trees and large houses close to the road is apparent.

Ulster Unionist Alderman, Roy Beggs Jnr has received correspondence from DRD Roads Service regarding the re surfacing of the A2 in August in which proposals to close sections of the A2 have been revised.
The Carrickfergus Councillor wrote to Roads Service senior management expressing specific concerns about the planned lane closures on the main commuter route, after the plan was brought to the attention of the Borough Council several weeks ago.
Roads Service is currently arranging to deliver 48,000 information leaflets to properties in the areas, which will be most directly affected by the A2 road works in August.

The preferred option that was chosen in June 2006 was a combined route, involving on-line widening of the Belfast-ward part of the A2, with an inland bypass for the Carrickfergus-ward section.

The scheme will involve building a new section of A2 between the Pepperhill and Marling Cross Junctions, the new road will be further away from the residential areas than the existing A2.
On the existing road (the old road) between Pepperhill / Downs Road and Marling Cross, a new combined footpath and cycleway route will be built together with extensive landscaping and planting which has been planned and designed to create an amenity area for public use.
