The A23 road, in its original form, was a major road running between London and Brighton,East Sussex, United Kingdom.
The boost in population of Brighton in the late eighteenth century, which transformed it from a small fishing village to a large seaside resort enhanced the importance of this route, as did the residence there of George IV, as Prince of Wales, who made it into a place of fashion.
Main roads running from the centre of London are always deemed to start from Charing Cross, although the A23 itself begins as Westminster Bridge Road near Waterloo station.

This road leads you all the way to the ground as long as you go straight over the two mini roundabouts en route.

We are concerned that with only the A217 single point access to an enlarged industrial estate, even more commuter and commercial vehicles are going to route through Gander Green Lane, Hamilton Avenue and Sutton Common Road.
Travelling from the A24 London Road side, these are the only logical approach roads when visiting the estate.
This might mean re-housing a couple of families, which I do appreciate is a bit of a not in my back yard statement and could be particularly distressing for the people concerned.

Earlsfield is a district of the London Borough of Wandsworth, lying to the East of the River Wandle.

Highways Services recommend focussing any changes that may be made at the junction on trying to prevent those manoeuvres identified as instrumental in most of the accidents; they are also investigating the feasibility of improving the pedestrian crossing layout.
If we want the relevant authorities to take seriously our road safety concerns, we need the majority of residents to respond positively to this latest questionnaire by answering, "Yes" to the questions posed.

The A24/A217 link road, as described by Donna O'Brien, had in fact a primary purpose as a two direction access road to the Kimpton Road Industrial Estate, thereby relieving Gander Green Lane of the heavy goods traffic.
The few trees lost is an emotive argument when balanced in the scale with the injuries and lives lost as a result of accidents in Gander Green Lane.
A road could still be built from the A24 and it could route through the estate by entering/exiting the industrial estate on one side and enter/exit from a different point at the A217 end.

Chris Price (Letters, July 19) is right to describe the A24/A217 Link Road as originally having "a primary purpose as a two-direction access road to the Kimpton Road Industrial Estate".
Mr Price may now wish to demand that the new A217 access road ensures that lorry access on to Gander Green Lane via Kimpton Road is stopped, with all traffic instead directed onto the A217.
The fact of the matter was that the 1973 plan for the Link Road was not implemented for 21 years under two administrations and really died when it was linked to retail schemes from 1994!
