 A23 road at AllExperts
The A23 road, in its original form, was a major road running between London to Brighton, United Kingdom.
Much of the route follows that of the Roman road laid between Londinium and Chichester; from 1717, when the Turnpike Trust was set up, this was one of the major routes out of London for the stagecoaches.
Main roads running from the centre of London are always deemed to start from Charing Cross, although the A23 itself begins as Westminster Bridge Road near Waterloo station.

 CBRD - Histories - The M23
The existing road, the A23, was mostly single carriageway and little improved since it had been given the number in the 1920s.
Roads on the south side of London are widely regarded as inadequate; the so-called South Circular route and inner ring road have been described as "no more than signposted routes".
The northern terminus of the M23 is an even bigger tribute to the failed project: empty flyovers cross a diverted A23, and the M23 suddenly drops to two lanes before piling all its traffic onto what should be slip roads and subsequently having to merge with the A23.

 SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A23
Oddly for one of the "radial" roads, the London end of the A23 is in the 3-zone -- one might logically expect it to start on the A3, but in fact it starts at the eastern end of Westminster Bridge near what used to be County Hall (the A302/A3200/A3036 junction, in fact).
Most of the main arterial roads out of London become dual carriageway or even motorway near their junction with the North or South Circular and continue that way, but the main route to Gatwick Airport and the south coast has many miles of single carriageway through the south London suburbs, making the journey agonizingly slow.
At the foot of the hill, the road returns to 3 lanes, and again is a pleasure to drive.
