  British road numbering scheme
Britain has a long history, and has many ancient roads and trackways dating back to the Roman occupation and before.
A1 London to Edinburgh (The Great North Road)\n* A2 London to Dover (Watling Street)\n* A3 London to Portsmouth (Portsmouth Road)\n* A4 London to Bristol (The Great West Road, or Bath Road)\n* A5 London to Holyhead (Watling Street)\n* A6 St.
Roads and lanes with yet lower traffic densities are designated 'C' and 'D' roads, but while these are numbered, in general this is done purely for the benefit of the local authorities, etc. who are responsible for maintaining them, and the numbering is arbitrary and does not, or should not, appear on any public signage.

Well, in Great Britain it seems that local authorities have discretion to allocate their own "C" and even "D" numbers, which may be duplicated across authorities.
To explain the situation, all roads in Northern Ireland come under the authority of the 'Roads Service', which is an agency of the new Department of Regional Development (NI), www.drdni.gov.uk.
