  Dynavector 1/48 A2D Skyshark
The two Skysharks were able early on to demonstrate that the estimated performance figures Douglas had quoted to the Navy were achievable; an order for 331 A2D-1s was made that fall as Chinese Communists armies overran the UN forces in North Korea and the Skyraider was proving its worth in the crucible of war.
Unfortunately, the Skyshark had an "Achilles heel," that being the main bearing of the Allison engine, which was basically two J-40 turbojets linked by this main bearing to provide power to the contra-rotating propellers.
It would be turbojet-powered, it would have the range to hit the enemy, the speed an maneuverability to protect itself, and the ability to carry one of the new lightweight nuclear weapons.

The Skyshark was a project of Douglas in 1950 to design a fast aircraft with a counter rotating propeller and a jet engine.
The leading edge typically of the Skyshark at the fuselage junction was obtained by extending the Fujimi parts with bits of the vacu wings.
The Skyshark is finished in high gloss Sea Blue of the US Navy, typical for the period.

 A2D Skyshark
The A2D Skyshark was a turboprop, attack aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the United States Navy.
The 17% wing root thickness on the standard AD series was reduced to less than 12% on the new model, with a corre-sponding reduction in tail thickness, Not only does this reduced thickness lower the parasite drag of the wing on the AD but it also delays the onset of compressibility difficulties.
At the speeds of which the plane was capable, the friction of the air generates' as high as 500 F of temperature over the ambient air which, on a warm day, is enough to soften the familiar blown plastic canopy materials.

But in the end, the A2D Skyshark became a footnote in Navy history, doomed in part by problems with its engine, gearbox and contra-rotating propellers.
The A2D had a wingspan of just over 50 feet, weighed 18,720 pounds when fully loaded and had a maximum speed of 501 miles per hour.
While the fate of the Skyshark was still undecided, the Navy began testing another new attack plane from the same company, the pure-jet A4D Skyhawk, later called the A-4, and destined to become one of the most successful aircraft of all time.

The A2D pilot who sits atop the dual drive shafts of the engine, is located well forward in the new Skyshark to provide all available vision.
Like every other line in the air-plane, however, there is a reason for this, At the speeds of which the new plane is capable, friction of the air generates' as high as 500 F of temperature over the ambient air which, on a warm day, is enough to soften the familiar blown plastic canopy materials.
In order for the A2D to cruise at its most efficient speed, special streamlined bombs are being developed which will permit it to fly more than 50 mph faster than with ordinary bombs In-stalled.

Provision was also made for the Skyshark to carry the AN/APS-19A radar, with the scanner being located inside the extreme nose of the propeller spinner.
In mid 1952, the Navy project office in charge of the A2D recommended cancellation of the project, and later that year the Navy cancelled most of the production A2Ds that were on order, leaving only ten remaining.

All performance figures are top secret; however it is known that the Skyshark carries four times as many bombs per gallon of fuel as former jet attack planes and takes off in two thirds the distance of jet fighters.
By combining high operating altitude, short take off, long range, high load carrying capacity and high speed approaching that of jet fighters, the Skyshark is particularly well suited as a carrier based attack, ground support or general purpose air-craft.
Before we begin construction may we suggest that the A2D makes an ideal candidate for Navy "Carrier Landing" com-petition which was inaugurated at the Nationals this year.

The Douglas A2D-1 Skyshark was a brutishly powerful turboprop attack aircraft that might have been a worthy successor to the A-1, had metallurgy of the Fifties been further advanced.
Various firms have modeled the Skyshark over the years: Airmodel, Allyn/Microscale and Rareplanes.

Later he designed the F3D "Skynight," the first jet to down another in night combat, in addition to the turboprop powered A2D "Skyshark," and the F4D "Skyray," carrier fighter, for which he received the 1953 Collier Trophy.
In 1958 Heinemann became vice president of military aircraft, however in 1960, after 31 years, he resigned from Douglas and joined Guidance Technology Inc. He then joined General Dynamics in October of 1962, becoming vice president of special products.

What started as a postwar turboprop upgrade to the successful Douglas Skyraider became the A2D Skyshark: a potentially tremendous attack aircraft capable of speeds of 500 mph and carrying a massive load.
Two Allison turbines buried in the fuselage acted together as a single XT40-2 super turboprop driving two contra-rotating props.
While the Skyshark was great idea on paper, it was plagued with catastrophic transmission failures (ending in the death of a test pilot) that couldn't be resolved.
