At Augst, the motorway splits, with the A2 branching off and the A3 continuing past Rheinfelden and Frick.
In Zurich the motorway ends and until the Uetliberg Tunel is completed in 2008, one must drive through the city.
After Zurich the motorway weaves through the hills of the south-east bank of Lake Zurich.

A6144(M) motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A6144(M) was a motorway in Carrington, Greater Manchester, England.
Also relatively rare was that the motorway was not a trunk road and was therefore not the responsibility of the Highways Agency.
The motorway also had no hard shoulder, just a couple of emergency lay-bys with SOS phones and lights at the end of the west bound carraigeway; many say this means it did not deserve motorway status.

The Motorway Archive. M27, The South Coast Motorway and A3(M)
To the east of M27 the six mile length of A3(M) from Horndean to Bedhampton takes the route of A3 out of the built-up areas between Horndean and Cosham and was presumably designated as motorway because at that time (1976) it was assumed it would be connecting directly to the M27 motorway.
A narrow gap had been left in the housing for construction of the motorway (a good example of some farsighted planning) but to transport this volume of chalk through a dense housing estate could be environmentally damaging for the residents and there were safety concerns as many young children lived on the estate.
The curvature of the motorway restricted the length of individual conveyor units as they could not be located outside the boundary of M27 (as RRL had assumed in their studies).

It is understood that because of a small deficiency in the width of the hard shoulders the road retained its all purpose status after the completion of the A3(M).
The four lane section of the A27 at its junction with the A3(M) is a particularly hazardous point for cyclists because they have to weave across several lanes of fast moving traffic.
A segregated route for cyclists is clearly desirable whether or not the A27 is upgraded to motorway.

Two display sections with dynamic direction indicators and integrated traffic jam information were installed on the southbound carriageway of the A3 motorway and two more on the eastbound carriageway of the A66 motorway at the Wiesbadener Kreuz junction.
The assembly of the display sections was carried out overnight, as it was necessary to close the carriageway over which the displays were to be erected completely for a few minutes.

This naming could also indicate a lower level of motorway [like the A6144(M) for example], but again, whilst the A3(M) is largely two lanes, it is just as much a motorway as any other 2-lane motorway.
Before those upstart motorways came along, the A3 was the London to Portsmouth route and the A30 was the London to Exeter (and points west) route.
A better bet would be to rename the A3(M) as a spur of the M27 and change the colour of the signs between the M27 and A3(M).

 Pathetic Motorways: M275
When I was a child we always played around the area and I watched the motorway slowly being built, they had completed the motorway (without surface) and had placed the bridge supports into the water ready for the sections that will then form the bridge.
IMV, the M275 is the best motorway in Britain for "going exploring", with Tipnor junction, the pedestrian crossing and odd sliproad spur, and the odd overbridge over nothing at the M27 junction.
They were designed to keep the road noise from the motorway at a minimum, unless you were unfortunate enough to have to live in them.

On a slightly different tack for a period in 1999/2000 (at least) the last 300m of the A12 extension at Hackney Wick was a ``secret motorway''.
Therefore the last 300m of the new road, where it tied in with the A102(M) was made under a Motorway order, it was only in 1998/99 (according to my spy!) that it was realised that this section of Motorway would be left high and dry between two bits of the A12.
