A4 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The road is London's main western artery, forking into the old A4, M4 motorway and A30 in the suburbs.
In Bristol the road forms an inner city ring road and runs through the Avon Gorge, terminating at the M5 motorway and Avonmouth docks.
The road was formerly classified as a trunk road, but since the 1960s the M4 motorway has relieved the road of long distance and freight journeys.

A39 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A39 is a major road in south west England.
It then merges with the A30 road for around five miles, reemerging near Zelah to head for the south Cornish coast via Truro and Falmouth.
In Cornwall and North Devon (until the junction with the A361 "North Devon Link Road"), the road is known as the "Atlantic Highway", and was classified as a trunk road until 2002.

Development Control Committee - Rail Freight Terminal Provision (ED/02/235/HQ) - 16 October 2002
The line of its southern section is identical to that of a similar link road proposed by the Skypark development, but the northern section is on a different alignment required in order to form a new roundabout junction with the former A30 and the access to this proposal.
Although initially the level of rail to road transport may be low, it has the opportunity to grow in time to contribute to reducing the journey length of goods hauled by road.
The proposal is well located, being close and linked to the major road and rail networks and it is considered that on balance the economic advantages of the provision of a freight terminal outweigh the loss of the identified mineral resource.

2.2 A strategy for the route was developed which involved signalising the junctions of Rosemary Lane/Green Lane and Vicarage Road with A30, widening the bridge over the railway and further widening to the County boundary to tie in with The Meadows gyratory of A30/A321 in Surrey.
Surveys of traffic flows undertaken at the junctions of Green Lane and Vicarage Road with A30, before and after the introduction of the traffic signals in April 1987, indicated a marked increase in traffic flows in Green Lane.
This has, however, resulted in an increase in traffic flow in Vicarage Road of approximately 500-600 vehicles per 12 hour day, although this increase also reflects the effects of new development in the area and cannot, therefore, be solely attributed to the closure of Green Lane.

Improvement of the A30 in Devon by providing a dual carriageway between Honiton Bypass and the B3183 west of the M5, bypassing Fenny Bridges, Fairmile and Clyst Honiton including five grade separated junctions and the addition of northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at M5 Junction 29.
The A303 is in the Trans European Road Network and is a major inter regional route between the M25 via the M3 to Exeter and the South West, and is the alternative route to the M4/M5 corridor for long distance traffic.
The scheme's objectives are to provide a new trunk road between the A31 and Mannings Heath; and to enhance the environment of both suburban and residential areas of Ferndown, Longham, Bear Cross and Hanley by removing through traffic, particularly traffic bound for the port area at Poole.

In Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset the road runs through many towns, such as Salisbury, Shaftesbury and Yeovil, so the more rural A303 road, which runs parallel to the A30 a few miles to the north is the trunk road between Basingstoke and Honiton, taking the bulk of traffic.
There were many protests by environmentalists against the damage caused by the building of this road, with a long-lasting occupation of sites on the planned route, focused around the village of Fairmile.

This is by no means an unknown phenomena in Cornwall where a number of consequential relocations followed the road building programmes of recent decades[1], suggesting it would be unwise to proceed with the dualling without a clearer understanding of the consequences.
That is, they were not a corollary of the single lane road itself but liable to solutions which would not need to involve the massive investment and environmental problems attendant on dualling of the entire stretch.
Vehicles will still be able to use the old A30 travelling west to just past the Castle-an-Dinas road and be able to travel to and from the area to Padstow, St Columb Major etc, and traffic flows have been suggested to be in the order of 5000 to 7000 vehicles a day.

The A30 trunk road between Innis Downs, Bodmin, and Indian Queens is a single carriageway stretch of road between two stretches of dual carriageway and is part of the main road link between Cornwall and the rest of Britain, traversing Goss Moor National Nature Reserve, a site of international ecological significance.
Cornwall FoE Transport Group argued for non-dualling options at the conference, but the conference concluded that a dual carriageway road was needed, and that the preferred route could redirect a local branch railway line between Par and Newquay and utilize the track bed where it runs parallel to the road.
The relationship between regional economic prosperity and road building is increasingly questioned, and is becoming particularly discredited in the case of so-called peripheral regions.

Present vehicle speeds are typical of this type of road with 85%ile speeds of 68 miles per hour eastbound and 67 miles per hour westbound.
Four of these resulted from loss of control in varying road and weather conditions, one was a rear end shunt and two were accidents in which carelessly driven westbound vehicles turning right were struck by overtaking vehicles in the outside traffic lane (one at Water End, one at Crown Lane junction).
In addition, the extension of the speed limit on to this length of road would devalue the impact and effectiveness of the proposed limit east of Nately Scures where it is justified and appropriate according to the criteria.

Exeter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Until the construction of main road by-passes in the twentieth century, Exeter was the lowest bridging point of the River Exe, and therefore developed as an administrative and route centre.
From Saxon times until the nineteenth century, the diocese of Exeter covered the whole of the counties of Devon and Cornwall, and civil administration and services tended to follow the lines of the ecclesiastical.
The older A30 road provides a shorter but sometimes slower route to London.

The eastern part of the outer ring road follows, for the most part, the pre-existing roads and lanes: Apart from Chartwell Road, the whole route is shown on the 1888 OS map.
