The A338 Bournemouth Spur Road, is a 16-kilometre roadway that runs along the western edge of the historic New Forest in Dorset, England.
The Spur Road is classified as a “dual carriageway,” which is similar to North American freeways, with two lanes of traffic in each direction, separated by a grassed “central reserve.” The busy roadway carries an average of 40,000 vehicles per day, of which approximately 4.5 percent are commercial vehicles carrying goods.
The Spur Road is being resurfaced in sections, as the condition of the road dictates and as budgetary constraints allow.

The internal road network within the conurbation has improved considerably in the last 30 years with schemes such as the A338 Bournemouth Town Centre By-Pass, improved access to Poole Town Centre by the A350 Holes Bay Road and A3049 Dorset Way/ Upton By-Pass.
However, roads with residential frontages still carry significant volumes of both local and through traffic as the strategic road network has not been completed.
Major relief road schemes, designed to cater for heavy traffic flows have been put forward as a solution in the past, but are not being progressed, largely because of (changing government policy and) severe environmental constraints.

 SABRE - Road Lists - Roads by 10 - A349
The A349 is the road between Wimborne and Poole and used to run from town centre to town centre, with either end being called ‘Poole Road’ and ‘Wimborne Road’.
When the A31 Wimborne bypass was opened in 1981, it was redirected to start on the bypass via a short link road and the original course of the road became the B3073 (itself an interesting road as it does a figure of 8 loop through Wimborne).
Whilst the road is dead straight, it is far from level, with numerous dips and blind summits, leading to a number of accidents over the years.

 SABRE - Road Lists - Roads by 10 - A348
The A348 is one of the routes into Poole from the A31 trunk road, but not a very useful one as it runs through built up areas all the way to Poole and is restricted almost all the way.
Before the bypass was built, this stretch of road was the A31 and is dual carriageway.
Unfortunately, none of the other bits were improved and the road has now been hemmed in by residential and commercial development, leaving an urban dual carriageway with several minor junctions with side-roads and roundabout.
