This report outlines an investigation of injury accidents on the A33, north east of Basingstoke, and has been prepared in response to local concern about the road safety in view of recent fatal accidents.
This 13.5 km (8.4 miles) section of A33 is a rural single carriageway road, with a minimum width of 7.3 metres, except for the dual carriageway section from A339 Reading Road roundabout to Crockford Lane roundabout (see figure 1).
Traffic flows on the road have increased in recent years due to the national vehicle growth and other factors such as County policy to divert traffic from the old A32 (now B3349), major developments at Chineham and the continued growth of Basingstoke.

This was planned to cross between the A329M and the Henley Road near Caversham Park Village.
However, the road would have to cross into Oxfordshire who objected to the plan as the County Council thought that more traffic would pass through the small roads to the north of the bridge.

Reading fan Ashley Kempson had his parking ticket quashed when an adjudicator ruled a clearway sign on the A33 Relief Road north of Madejski Stadium did not cover people parking on the grass verge.
“These included new signage to make it clear that the A33 is a clearway and that for safety reasons parking cannot be permitted on the road or the verges.
“It would be irresponsible for the council to condone parking that involves leaving and rejoining a 40mph limit road across the kerb, footpath and cyclepath.
