A3400 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A3400 is a road in the Midlands of England, running from Hockley Heath (near Solihull) to a junction with the A44 near Chipping Norton.
The road was renumbered in the early 1990s, after the newly completed M40 motorway took away most of its long-distance traffic, leaving the route with a lower traffic volume than its designed capacity.
The A3400 passes through a number of attractive market towns in Warwickshire including Henley-in-Arden, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Shipston-on-Stour.

 The numbering system
Note that the old road remains to the west of the A5 and is thus in the ``correct'' cone.
Roads in England are generally considered to begin from the London end, and roads in Scotland from the Edinburgh end.
I presume it merited a number because of being the road to the Scalpay ferry, and hence in local terms a ``trunk'' route, but could not in all honesty be classified as a B road.

The Eastern extension of the Stratford Southern Relief Road will connect the existing roundabout on the A3400 Shipston Road at its junction with Seven Meadows Road, to a new roundabout on the A422 Banbury Road, providing access at a further roundabout to the Trinity Mead housing development, which is currently under construction.
The scheme involves the construction of a 1.2km length of single lane carriageway and the construction of a single span reinforced concrete bridge over Rush Brook, which also allows pedestrians using the public footpaths to cross safely under the road.
Section Engineer Chris Horn said of the new road scheme: "This will not only provide access to the new housing development, but will also be a useful bypass route on the southeast side of the town of Stratford which should relieve traffic problems in the Alveston roundabout area."
