The A36 Corridor Alliance (ACA) was established in October 1993 as a coalition of local opposition groups, and environmental, landscape and transport campaigns opposed to the Department of Transport's plans for the creation of a high-speed dual-carriageway route from Southampton to Bristol.
Local authorities that had prepared major road schemes in apparent defiance of government policy were now able to make a virtue of their foresight in anticipating the new requirements.
The road leads to profit generation—for civil engineering contractors, motor manufacturers oil companies and a thousand other parts of the "great car economy"—but it is not in itself profitable.

Introduction 1.1 Totton Town Centre (see Figure 1) is divided by three main roads - the A36 Salisbury road, A36 Commercial Road and A336 Ringwood Road, which converge at a major 4-arm roundabout junction.
To the north of the roundabout, on A36 Salisbury Road and Water Lane, is one main shopping area while to the south of the A36/A336 is ASDA, a large store which generates considerable pedestrian and vehicle movements.
That the pelican crossing measures outlined in the above report be implemented, together with the permanent closure of Junction Road and provision of bus laybys as shown in Figure 2, the works being funded from developers contributions.

Bath Lodge is located on the A36 Bath to Warminster road approximately 7 miles south of Bath on the left hand side as you head south.
Pay small toll and follow the road until coming to a T junction with the A36 turn left in the direction of Warminster and we are 7 miles along on the left hand side just after the junction with the A366.
At the T-junction with the A36 turn right, follow the A36 for approximately 14 miles and Bath Lodge is situated 1 mile north of the village of Woolverton on the right-hand side.

The speed limit on the A36 west of Maurys Lane (50mph limit) is adhered to in the main between the hours of 06:00 and 20:00.
The entry deflection for roundabouts is dictated by the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges Volume 6 TD16/93, which states that the minimum radius at the tightest section of the vehicle entry path shall not exceed 100m.

In November 1994, the Whinwhistle road feasibility study was carried out by Hampshire county council; that was rapidly followed by the 1994 Whinwhistle road supplementary report by Hampshire county council; and the May 1995 Whinwhistle road second supplementary report by Hampshire county council.
The future of this road in Hampshire and the safety of my constituents is governed by the Government office for the south-west, even though we are in the south-east.
They need the road to be made safer, and they need that to be done as soon as is humanly—nay, superhumanly—possible, if we are to avoid further fatalities such as we have suffered this very day.

It is understood that a decision on the status of the route is planned to be announced to coincide with the Local Transport Plan Settlement in December.
However a link road carries with it the risk of generating some extra local movements, as would any such road scheme close to an urban area, and there would be an inevitable intrusion into the landscape.
When the Trunk Road system was introduced in 1936, many important roads were trunked up to the boundaries of County Boroughs such as Bath.
