The road reverts to single carriageway for a short section to the junction where it meets the A5127 Lichfield to Sutton Coldfield road (via Shenstone), and the A5148 (for the A38 north), at a roundabout.
The road briefly enters Staffordshire at crossroads (with traffic lights) for the B5011 and A5195 (formerly the B5011 which heads to Burntwood and the M6 Toll junction T6), after which the road crosses the Wyrley and Essington Canal, near the Chasewater Reservoir and Holland Park.

This road was cut through in 1980 to alleviate the traffic congestion in the middle of the town when Wiveliscombe was on the main A361 road to Barnstaple and north Devon.
On the north side of the main road is one of the oldest houses in the town and was at one time known as Manor Farm.
The house on the corner of the road was once a toll house on the Taunton to Wiveliscombe toll road which operated in the early part of the nineteenth century.

At this time the trackbed was clearly used by farm vehicles, as prior to the building of the housing estate on the other side of the A361, this must have been a convenient route between fields, avoiding the main road.
New houses were built some years ago on the other side of the road, and presumably the recent clearance operations herald the end of the station's existence.

The A361 trunk road was identified in the 1998 White Paper "A New Deal for Transport: Better for Everyone" as a trunk road that mainly serves local and regional traffic.
The Secretary of State decided that such roads would be more appropriately managed by the local highway authorities to enable decisions to be taken locally, and to be better integrated with local transport and land use planning issues.

The road starts in Ilfracombe as part of the town's High Street, and is mostly single carriageway.
The road passes through the villages of Knowle and Braunton, before becoming dual carriageway standard at Ashford, which continues for the short distance to Barnstaple.
The road has been re-numbered A4361 from its junction with the A4 immediately south of Avebury northwards, becoming the A361 again at the junction with the A419 which passes north-east of Swindon.
