 | | Nearly all public roads have been surfaced since the early part of the 20th century, and the country has a good coverage of purpose-built dual carriageways (divided highways) and motorways (freeways), built from the 1950s onwards. |
 | | A-roads are the other major routes; they vary from motorway-standard to narrow local roads, and have 1, 2, 3 or 4-digit numbers prefixed with 'A'. |
 | | They were downgraded to A-roads in 2000 when the Greater London Authority took control of all roads within its boundaries, with the exception of the M1, M3, M4 and M11 which remain property of the Highways Agency. |
