It is near the eastern end of the Severn Bridge, which was built in 1966 to carry the M4 motorway (now the M48 motorway) over the route of the old Aust Ferry.
A road, now known as the old passage, runs near the A403 that follows the bank of the River Severn and is Aust's most prominent attraction.
The ruins of a ferry terminal and a long concrete path that leads to a small beach near the bridge can be found near the old passage.

Cross the A369 road where it meets the roundabout and then cross the entrance and exit roads from the services, before taking a footpath that heads eastwards squeezed between the M5 on the left and the services on the right.
Continue along the road past the station and almost immediately take a road that leads off to the right to head northwards for a short distance to a roundabout with the A403 road.
It joins the A403 once again at a lay-by and continues along the verge for a few hundred yards (there is no pavement beside the road) before diving off to the left.

Please note that not all minor roads in Cornwall are as well signposted as they could be.
The route details are exactly the same as the ones we used, but the section from "Ludlow to Shrewsbury" was very hilly and I would recomend changing that part of the route.
Also our original route from Dumfries to Sanquar was to have been on minor roads, but due to the weather we stopped on the A76.

This is a "totso"; the A36 continues straight ahead as primary, while the A4 forks off to the left as non-primary (the signs attempt to disguise the fact that it's the A4).
After that it becomes London Road, which is joined by a spur from the A36, where it once again becomes a primary route.
There was originally supposed to be a link road to the A36, but this was cancelled for political reasons, and so all the traffic just goes back over the Avon again to another roundabout at Bathford, where the dual carriageway ends (the A363 also leaves here).

The “patch” is centred on the village of Severn Beach and dominated by the structure of the Second Severn Crossing.
Accessed from the A403 into Kingsweston Lane and then left onto the road to the refuse works, a small “square pool” is viewed from the road.

The road narrows and weaves in and out of the industrial area past various factories belching out smoke and finally leaves all this behind as it travels parallel with the Severn Estuary offering a view to the left of the modern Second Severn Crossing carrying the M4.
The main road become a dual carriageway for a short while as it goes through the Pilning traffic light junction where the B4064 from Severn Beach and Redwick, and the B4055 from Cribbs Causeway meet.
After this the A403 crosses flat marshy plains with the occasional dual carriageway at the junctions for Northwick and Old Passage (where the old Aust ferry used to take cars across the river before the old Severn Bridge was constructed).

Follow the road for about two miles through a couple of sets of traffic lights and straight over a small roundabout.
Severn Park is on the right hand side just after Excel and a big advertising board and before a sharp left hand bend where Smoke Lane becomes Chittern Road.

Pilning and Severn Beach and Almondsbury parish councils registered common concern that the plan would cause congestion, noise and pollution and create an "unfriendly and stressful" environment along the B4055 through Easter Compton and Pilning.
There would be increased danger for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists because the road was unsuitable for lorries - the very reason why a 7.5 tonne restriction was already in place.
But Redrow mounted a High Court challenge to the Government decision - which would have forced the company to construct alternative access points from the M49 from the A403 Avonmouth road - claiming the traffic ban was unjust in the light of still-valid planning consents granted by Gloucestershire County Council in 1957.

The M48 does have two of its own junctions though, one in England for the A403, and one in Wales for Chepstow.
Despite connecting to the M4 at each end, it lies north of the M4 and west of the M5, so it should really have a 5-number.
If you want to get really technical, you could argue that since this is the old M4 route it remains the zone boundary, but I'm not convinced.
