  A42 road
The A42 is a major trunk road in the United Kingdom.
The A42 is in effect a continuation of the M42, and its junctions are numbered accordingly.
The whole road disappeared in 1935 - the section from Reading to Shillingford became part of the A329, Shillingford to Oxford became part of the A423 and Oxford to Birmingham became part of the A34.

Junction 4A to 5 is one of the busiest sections of the M5, partly because a significant amount of traffic from the west of England wishing to use the M40 London route joins at junction 5 (Droitwich) and makes a detour north to junction 4A in order to join the M42.
Plans to widen the motorway to 4 lanes between junctions 17 and 21 were removed from the road buiding programme.

 CBRD - British Roads FAQ
Nearly all public roads have been surfaced since the early part of the 20th century, and the country has a good coverage of purpose-built dual carriageways (divided highways) and motorways (freeways), built from the 1950s onwards.
Older roads are generally well maintained and surfaced, but are rarely widened or re-aligned and often their courses have been unchanged for centuries.
A-roads are the other major routes; they vary from motorway-standard to narrow local roads, and have 1, 2, 3 or 4-digit numbers prefixed with 'A'.

 SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A42
The original A42 was the main road from Oxford to Birmingham, swallowed up early on by the extension of the A34 (originally Winchester to Oxford) as far as Manchester.
In the early-mid 1980's, traffic on the only link road providing access from the north east to the south west, the A38 between Birmingham and Derby was getting pretty ridiculous - the road was fine but both ends tipped the traffic into a large urban tangle before a decent motorway connection.
From here the road curves north-east once more, passing larger lay-bys (chances are there will be German truckers asleep in these) and three miles later non-motorway traffic is ushered off to the left to rejoin the A453 and we merge with the M1.
