The height of the bridge and the angle of the road make for a difficult manoeuvre for heavy good vehicles and coaches which have to take over the whole width of the road to pass under the bridge.
The long descent towards Commins Coch is a relatively new stretch of road that replaced a record breaking set of road-works that had traffic light controlled single lane working for over 10 years because of unstable ground conditions.
The road is mountainous in parts, particularly over the Brecon Beacons, south of Dolgellau and over the Crimea Pass.

The road starts on the A38, although the A38 actually goes under the Circus in a tunnel (and is called the A4400 while it's duplexing with the inner ring road (which is no longer a ring road)).
The road crosses the picturesque River Severn here by means of one of Thomas Telford's bridges - or I should say it did until the town bypass was built a few years ago.
This section of the road is considered quite dangerous, and a 50 mph limit has recently been imposed.

The section of road I am thinking of is the B4380 near Shrewsbury, which links the A5 (from the M54 and Telford) to the A458 to Bridgnorth.
Sent: 2/15/2004 1:14 PM Before construction of another road bridge over the River Esk on the A171 in the late 1970s, I'm pretty sure that the B1416 south of Whitby was primary.
Most of these have now been upgraded to A-roads (although not necessarily retaining primary status) except for a few such as the B679 and B6178 which are still B-roads but are now non-primary (including the defunct B7053, most of which is now the B765).

The section of A458 between the Welsh Border and Welshpool is the responsibility of the Welsh National Assembly.
The road humps should either comply with minimum standards set out in the Highway (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 or otherwise be authorised by the Secretary of State (there is an additional special procedure for authorising road humps in London).
If a road hump is not so constructed, it may constitute an obstruction or nuisance in which case an individual may be able to obtain compensation for damages that are attributable to the presence of the hump in the road.

Unfortunately the first part of the walk involved more road walking than I would have liked, but that was probably just as well as the footpaths were generally a morass of squelchy, clingy mud which made walking difficult and reduced the enjoyment considerably.
Continue straight on as the road passes to the left of a wooded area before it eventually ends at a T-junction near Middleton Baggot.
Turn right and follow the road as it almost immediately swings around to the left to head south-northwestwards for a short distance past a phone box until it ends at a T-junction.

The road limit was and still is 60mph on that stretch of the A458.
I was careful to check that the road was clear as I prepared to cross and took hold of my son's hand and the carry seat.
The problem is the road cuts several villages in half, and seems to attract drivers who want to get from A to B with absolutely no consideration for anyone living inbetween.

Beware, some of these roads attract idiots in Subarus who travel at 100mph+ While there is occasionally cover from VASCAR and hand held radar speed limit enforcement devices they may not be there to protect you when you travel.
Concentrate on the road, not the topiary on the hedges of the cottage on the junction.
Both these roads demand respect, but if you have good observation skills and stay off the berms of gravel which collect on the B4368 you will be rewarded with fine cross country views into some great bends.

The A458 begins at a roundabout on the A456 at Quinton, just to the east of the M5 motorway, though there is no junction at this point.
Obviously, it is the unclassified road which is dual carriageway, the A road is the A4034 heading towards Blackheath.
From here, the road is heading north-west, and we continue to pass through fields until we reach a roundabout with the A454 on the east side of Bridgenorth.

We turn right, multiplexing with the B road for a short distance before turning left into Norton Road at a mini-roundabout.
We meet the ring road at a roundabout, and turn left (east) to muliplex with the A456 as far as the next roundabout.
We continue along Stourport Road, then, as we leave the built up area, the A451 becomes dual carriageway, at least until we pass an athletics track on the way into Stourport-on-Severn.

At Compton, the road turns sharp right, and heads up the hill through tree-lined surroundings, past the educational establishments of Wolverhampton University (Compton campus) and Wolverhampton Grammar School (founded in 1512) until we reach the A41 at Chapel Ash.
Although the road is mostly four lanes wide at this point, it is generally insufficient for the traffic using this route heading for the M6, and so is best avoided at busy times.
The road here has had to be the subject of some traffic calming measures, as a blind bend and a hump backed bridge seemed to attract the local idiots.

I am uterly sickened to have driven for 8 hours (to Kidderminster and back) and received 3 points and a demand for £60 pounds after mistaking a stretch of unfamiliar road the A456 as being a 40mph zone, I kept to 37mph.
on rural roads they can only cover a small streach people will only slow as soon as they noticte them then as soon as the re are by they will speed up.
Cameras set at zero tolerance cause more danger because rather than watching the road, you are watching your speedo like a hawk.

When that road was downgraded, the A453 took over the numbering of the A648 (see A648 entry for maps), and the latter number is now dead.
A new bridge will cross the river Usk at the junction of Corporation Road and Spytty Road to join the A4042 Usk Way on the opposite bank of the river which continues all the way to join the A48 close to J28 M4.
Then from Dudley via Netherton and Old Hill to Halesowen, where it crosses the A458 and ends on the A456.

If you are taking the A458 (T) road into Wales from Welshpool to Mallwyd, be sure to stop off for a while at Cann Office Hotel, Llangadfan (map ref. SJ 012107, sheet 125).
Its business-like name is actually derived from 'Cae'n y ffos', meaning fortified or ditched enclosure, and an old earthwork belonging to a twelfth century motte and bailey is in the inn's back-garden.
Turn right with the road and just before the last house on your right is a plaque in the wall telling the history of St Cadfan's Well.

One guide books suggests that the restriction was imposed because customers of the inn - which opens directly onto the street - blocked the road with their horse and carts.

Glyn Davies, Welsh Conservative AM for Mid and West Wales is warning that the environment of Middletown in Mid Wales is under serious threat as a result of a Road Improvement Scheme being planned for the A458 between Welshpool and the English border.
Commenting on the likelihood of the quarry being reopened when the road improvement goes ahead Glyn Davies said: "It would be a living hell in the village of Middletown if the stone for the A458 road improvement comes from the Middletown Quarry.
It would be a huge threat to the environment of the village as well as a threat to life as hundreds of heavy lorries loaded with stone descend the steep incline from the quarry.
