A47 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A47 is a trunk road in England linking Birmingham to Great Yarmouth (although most of the section between Birmingham and Nuneaton has been reclassified as the B4114).
At Nuneaton, the road re-emerges as the A47 from a junction with the A444, near a BP garage at the Anker service station on Weddington Road.
The road is notorious for conjestion, especially during the holiday season, and also for the number of accidents, which due to the drainage ditches on either side of the road are often fatal, and demands for dualing have been heard for many years, although there are no current plans to go ahead with this.

House of Commons Hansard Debates for 2 Nov 2005 (pt 2)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
We have consistently argued for the dualling of the A47 on the grounds of road safety, east-west communications, and meeting the criteria of alleviating social deprivation, particularly in areas such as Great Yarmouth, and encouraging economic development—ironically, criteria that were all established by the Government.
The A47 is inadequate to meet the existing traffic flows of Norfolk's population, even without the demand made by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Norfolk to provide 78,000 extra homes in the next decade.
Another consequence of the accident on 3 October was that the A47 was shut for nearly 12 hours and diversions occurred through Fakenham in the north and Thetford in the south, miles and miles away.

Roads to Ruin - Eastern Region   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Dunstable Eastern Bypass is in effect a relief road (or 'throughpass') for the A5 and a congested section of the M1.
The road would rejoin the A5 close to another school complex, which would effectively be sandwiched between the A5 and the bypass.
It is intended to provide a high quality road link from the radial network to East Anglia as an alternative to the M25 and the M11, by relieving the major bottleneck on the A505.

Mattishall Village in the Heart of Norfolk
This estimate is based on experience of installing roundabouts on other parts of the trunk road network and also includes contingencies for unknown factors such as how the roundabout may be constructed (for example keeping traffic congestion to a minimum), whether land is available and whether underground services are affected or require diverting.
Your proposed study transfers the likelihood of a fatal accident on the A47 from the junction at the end of the Mattishall Road to the Berry’s Lane/Wood Lane/A47 junction.
It is, and has been for a long time, impossible to access the A47 safely from the Mattishall Road, in spite of previous accident remedial measures carried out, and delaying a scheme for a further 2 to 3 years will undoubtedly result in further serious injuries and loss of life.

The tarmac line down the centre is where the edge of the road used to be; off to the right is a long driveway (I suppose the tarmac off the edge of the road would have been a short sliproad for it).
It does make me wonder how long this restaurant survived after the road was moved -- peering through the steel shuttered windows, all the furniture remains, including a Walls freezer with the late 90's new logo (which indicates it was still in use at least until then).
The houses in the background weren't there before the road was moved; there's planning permission posted up for the restaurant to be levelled and the land used for more houses, so soon this little historical oddity will be gone forever.

A563 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Starting at the A6 in Oadby, the road progresses clockwise, passing between Knighton and Wigston (crossing the Welford Road), then to the south of Aylestone (crossing the A426), then turning north by Fosse Park.
The A47 is not dual carriageway and already congested at peak hours, so attempting to continue the A563 eastwards until open countryside seems problematic.
The section of road was built between the junction with Victoria Road East and Gipsy Lane to the south, and Thurmaston Lane to the north.

I am told by Lord Whitty, the Minister responsible for trunk roads, that the panel's report is due in mid-May. At that point, the Secretary of State will have the power either to accept the report or to modify its conclusions, but, in any event, he will have to consult those involved.

 SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A47
The A47 starts on the Yarmouth western bypass although when it was built in the '80's this was numbered as part of the A12.
Giving the same number to two roads, even when (especially when?) one forks directly off the other is (I realize since joining SABRE) far more common than you would think and no doubt the authorities have their reasons; to me, though, the practice is still forking daft.
Once upon a time the A47 passed close to Peterborough Cathedral, offering the first blessed vertical relief to eyes grown somewhat bleary from the voyage across the long horizontals of the Fens; nowadays it sweeps around the northern side of the city mostly in tree-lined cutting so that you hardly see even a house.
