  Getting to WHR (Caernarfon)
As an alternative beyond Porthmadog, turn right at Tremadog for Beddgelert (A4085) and then Caernarfon; although this route can be slower (particularly in Summer, when Beddgelert can be a bottleneck), it runs close to much of the route of the WHR trackbed.
Helen's Road, where the station is. From the Bangor/Anglesey end, follow the A487 through the town, filtering for Porthmadog or Pwllheli, and then turning right at the roundabout past the Tesco supermarket.
The village is on the A487 but is not properly signposted; however the road leading from the main road in the village to the station is signposted for Dinas and Saron, with a further sign for the Lôn Eifion cycle path.

Stay on the A487 through Caernarfon, until you reach the outskirts of Bangor.
Leave the A487 after the Felinheli bypass, joining the A55 at junction 9.

 GO BRITANNIA! Wales: Sacred Places - Pentre Ifan & Castell Henllys
Overlooking the town on the slopes of Carn Ingli are the remains of an Iron Age fort and pre-Christian hut circles.
This Iron Age and Romano-British Hill fort was partly excavated and partly reconstructed to show the kind of huts lived in, the various crafts and animal husbandry practiced and so on.
On the A487 heading east just after you leave Newport (which is twinned with Annapolis, Maryland) is the Golden Lion (Llew Aur: Thlew Ire) an attractive pub with full catering and overnight facilities.

From the south turn on to the A486 at Synod Inn - the Synod Inn Pub is on the corner.
Coming from the north (Aberystwyth), turn on to the B 4342 at Llanarth - there is a bright yellow pub, the Llanina Arms Hotel on the corner.
There are also excellent views from the A487 between Aberarth and Llanon where Red Kites may often be seen soaring above the sea cliffs.

Plans for improvements to the A487 between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth at Glandyfi are to go on show this week.
The section of the trunk road is part of the A487 Fishguard to Bangor Trunk Road and provides an essential north-south link on the western limit of Wales.
There is no alternative to this particular section of trunk road between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth without a detour of some fifty-two miles.

Flows into an estuary next to Newport, which is on the A487 between Fishguard and Cardigan.
At the level we did it all routes were runnable, though the fish-steps were a bit stoppery.
After the weir the A487 road bridge is reached, this is about 4km into the run.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will take steps to avoid the closure of the A487 across the Cob at Porthmadog, during rebuilding of the retaining walls; and what arrangements he has made for the alternative routing of trunk road traffic during the rebuilding.
The Department is presently in discussion with The Rebecca Trust concerning the condition of the retaining walls on either side of the cob at Porthmadog.
Some temporary closures may, however, be inevitable due to the narrowness of the A487 across the cob.

 Walk #396: Aberystwyth to Cwrt
I had decided against doing this as it is not a right of way, but after due consideration I thought that a careful crossing of the bridge would be safer than walking along the A487 - it is also a much shorter route.
It looks as though this road will be quieter than the A487 on the southern side, but even so I am not looking forward to walking along it.
I may set off early in the morning to avoid the traffic, or if the worst comes to the worst I may follow roads and tracks that parallel the estuary on the hillside to the north.

Driving from Haverfordwest to Fishguard on the A40, turn left at Letterston, opposite 'Something's Cooking' (lovely fish and chips) onto the B4331which joins up with the A487 on the Fishguard side of Mathry.
Drive past the caravan park and Mabws Fawr is the next tarmac drive on the left, less than half a mile up the hill.
Please use the car park on the left as you come in to Mabws Fawr, so as not to disturb other residents.
