The height of the bridge and the angle of the road make for a difficult manoeuvre for heavy good vehicles and coaches which have to take over the whole width of the road to pass under the bridge.
The long descent towards Commins Coch is a relatively new stretch of road that replaced a record breaking set of road-works that had traffic light controlled single lane working for over 10 years because of unstable ground conditions.
The road is mountainous in parts, particularly over the Brecon Beacons, south of Dolgellau and over the Crimea Pass.

 Walk #404: Clynnog Fawr to Snowdon Ranger
At the road turn left to cross the Afon Gwyrai on a bridge and follow this road for a couple of hundred yards uphill.
At the A487 turn left to cross over the river and then take the first road to the left, which heads northwards into Caernarfon and the other side of the swing bridge.
The initial stretch of this road has a pavement beside it, but when this ends aside from a few other isolated stretches there are not any more, but the road was quiet enough when I walked along it.

 Getting to WHR (Caernarfon)
Helen's Road, where the station is. From the Bangor/Anglesey end, follow the A487 through the town, filtering for Porthmadog or Pwllheli, and then turning right at the roundabout past the Tesco supermarket.
Alternatively the road through the old rail tunnel under Castle Square (Twnel Tan y Maes) can be approached from the north (not open to pedestrians) from roads signposted for Victoria Dock and A487 (South), and emerges at a mini-roundabout adjacent to the station.
The village is on the A487 but is not properly signposted; however the road leading from the main road in the village to the station is signposted for Dinas and Saron, with a further sign for the Lôn Eifion cycle path.

Though paddleable from the end of the road in Cwm Pennant during high water conditions, this is a real pain because of the number of trees.
The river is only grade II until the main A487 trunk road bridge, but there was one set of wires under the Brynkir road bridge which required portaging.
A little way beyond the main road bridge is a weir that should be fairly obvious from the river.

The wall is part of the Porthmadog Cob built by William Alexander Madocks in the years 1808-1811 to reclaim some 7000 acres of land from the tidal waters of the Afon Glastyn.
Although the A487 road along the Cob is very narrow, (5.5m) the contractors carried out and completed the work with little disruption to traffic.
The job was such a success, that from now on Gwynedd Council's policy is to use pigmented mortar of this type for all similar works in the Snowdonia National Park and throughout the county.

I joined the road in the village of Tre'r-ddol, where the pub, which is marked on the map, shut at Christmas.
Follow the B4353 road for a couple of miles eastwards until the junction with the A487(T) road is reached in Tre'r-ddol.
At the farm follow the road northwards for a couple of kilometres until it ends at the A493 road in Cwrt, where this walk ends.

Aberaeron is 16 miles south of Aberystwyth and 22 miles north-east of Cardigan, on the A487 road.
If you are driving, head south from the town centre, along the A487, cross the bridge over the Aeron river and you will see the large Parish Church a little way up the hill on the left.
Alternatively, it is a short walk from the town, turning along the passage alongside the church.

 Forestry Commission - News - dangerous trees to be felled
A section of the A487 road between Machynlleth and Corris, known locally as Evans Bridge, Ceinws, will be subjected to traffic restrictions from Monday, January 24 to February 18 to enable potentially dangerous roadside trees to be felled.
Traffic lights will be in force during the operation and it will be necessary to close both carriageways for up to 10 minutes while the trees are actually felled.
The trees, up to 60 feet tall, were identified as potentially dangerous by Forestry Commission Wales local area manager Dave Farmery, who carried out a survey last spring after two trees fell across the road causing the carriageway to be blocked.
