Several new road schemes have also been announced - the most controversial of which was a relief road for the M4 at Newport, around the traffic flspot known as Brynglas Tunnels.
But road traffic expert Dr Anthony Beresford, of Cardiff Business School, told BBC Wales a toll road around Newport would be "a white elephant for 20 hours a day".

The A497 begins in the north Wales town of Porthmadog on the A487, at a roundabout a short distance north-west of the southern end of the world famous Ffestiniog Railway.
Like many other roads in this group, there is a large expanse of low lying ground on one side and a barruer of hills on the other and the road stays as close to the hills as possible.
After leaving Pwllheli - the road is not particularly wide at first, but without large deviations in course - the large round thing is part of a fairly large camp site with a golf driving range attached - but you can't see any of this from the road itself.

At the roundabout just past the Esso garage near to the junction of the A497, keep to the left hand lane which is marked Llanbedrog.
As you go around a slight right hand bend, you will approach a cross roads where a sign is marked Penrhos to the right.
Travel approximately a further half a mile along the main A499 road and look out for turning on the right with a sign marked Penrhos.

Turn off the A487 Porthmadog to Caernarfon road along the B4411 where, about 2 kilometres down here, it is possible to turn off rightwards and cross the river at a small bridge by Fron Oleu Farm GR474417.
Rapids continue down to the next road bridge, after which the river begins to ease off and one further fence required portaging.
Pass under the main A497 road bridge and finish off at the next small bridge, which is Bont Fechan.

 Walk #400: Porthmadog to Pwllheli
The first section of road to Llanystumdwy had a pavement, but this ended at the village so I diverted along the quieter roads through the village, passing the Lloyd George Museum on the way.
Head downhill past a series of hotels, and when the road turns to the right follow it northwards over the railway line (the footpath marked on the OS map going westwards along the coast was shut due to erosion when I walked the route; this may reopen in the future).
Pass the Lloyd George museum and cross the bridge over the river, and follow the road around until it ends at the A497 road to the west of the village.

The plan to upgrade the A497 was first proposed almost ten years ago, but since then public opinion and government policy have changed to favour lower speed on rural roads.
The traffic flow, which shows marked seasonal fluctuation, can be accommodated on this attractive rural road, with safety improvements in some places, without the sacrifice of thirty acres of adjoining rural landscape.
Wanting a faster road, as outlined in Gwynedd Council's Statement of Case, is too trivial a reason set against the cost to the community and environment of the current proposal.

Turn left along this road for a sort distance until it ends at a roundabout with the A497 road in Nefyn.
Turn left to follow the B4417 road northeastwards out of the town for about a mile, and when you reach a cottage on the left take a footpath that heads off northeastwards, passing a ruined hotel at Pisty and farms at Cefnydd and Cilau.
Cross a stream and when this road end at a T-junction turn left along a road that heads eastwards for a mile before ending at the A499 road.

When you have parked, follow the road or track to its end and you will go through a thin path which brings you out right next to the estuary.
From Pwllheli on the A497, just past the second turn for Llanystumdwy there is a small lane that goes off on the right hand side of the road.
Follow this thin road over the railway and when it branches into two, take the right turning.

Sent: 10/12/2004 7:52 AM The A to Z Road Atlas is now in WH Smiths, and since my 2005 AA Atlas had already disintegrated before the end of July 2004 I decided to treat myself.
This road will cross direct from the 5 zone to the 7 zone, so I wonder how it will be numbered.
The existing road is twisty, narrow, with very poor sight lines, and busy in the summer, but somehow I never imagined that it would ever be improved.

 Criccieth: Touring Wales on Britannia
Criccieth is a small resort village a few minutes west of Porthmadog on the A497 that runs toward Pwllheli, on Tremadog Bay.
Its dominant castle, perched on its rocky hill, was first a Welsh stronghold, for it was begun in 1230 and extended in 1260, before Edward I made it into one of his strongholds that put a noose around North Wales.
Continuing on the A497 to Pwllheli, just down the road from Criccieth, we reach the tiny village of Llanystumdwy (Thlan Uh Stim Dooween), where David Lloyd George, Welsh Prime Minister of Britain during World War I and architect of many of its social services, kept his home and where he died in 1945.

Please note that there is a speed restriction on the roads within the marina complex.
Follow the road into the marina, on your right there are two buildings, the first is the Sailing Club, the second are the Marina Offices, take the second turning on your right and the offices are in front of you.

There are a lot of A roads in Haverfordwest and two of them are primary - the A40 trunk road runs east from here towards London, and north towards Fishguard, bypassing the town to the north east, whilst at the same time running through the town.
The two contenders are the roundabout on the inner version of the A40 at Cartlett Road, where the A487 heads west over the River Cleddau.
The streets were too narrow to cope with the traffic, and what is actually a pleasant town was marred by the volume of queuing traffic on the road.

Eisteddfa Fishery is one of the best purpose built Carp Lakes in North West Wales surrounded by stunning views of the sea and mountains.

COMPLETING major roadworks near Pwllheli seems a step closer this week, as a new section of the A497 has been opened to the public.
Traffic lights and workmen on the road from Llanystumdwy, past Afonwen to Abererch has caused months of headache to locals, but the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel.
The section from Afonwen to Hafan y M r is now complete, as Wil Roberts, Pwllheli town councillor and member of the A497 partnership, explained.
