		The Holyhead Road was of vital economic and strategic significance in the recently-united United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, connecting as it did the capital cities of the two principal islands in the Kingdom.
		This is because the land on the "uninhabited" side of the road is part of the Wakefield Lodge estate, former residence of the Dukes of Grafton.
		Before construction of the toll road, the roundabout was very strange and had all the ramps for grade separation between the A5 west of the junction and the A5148.

		Junction 22 used to be the A50, but that road was diverted north and now crosses at the new junction 24a at Nottingham.
		Thanks to this road the driver now gets to sample the Sheffield flyover, where the M1 briefly (about 1.5 miles) becomes a dual carriageway (the only part of it that is, I believe).

		In the north, the M45 diverted traffic onto the A45 to Birmingham; in the south the M10 dropped traffic at the A414 and A405, the predecessors to the M25.
		Since most traffic now uses it as a section of the A414, leaving at the next junction up, a link road will be constructed alongside the M1 and the A414 will then continue on what is now the M10, up the new road and onto the next section of A414 at junction 8.
