Road bridges on the 5km stretch were of an innovative design - later used at Rhuallt Hill - to reduce maintenance by creation of a continuous deck.
In early 1999, UK Highways A55 Ltd, a subsidiary of UK Highways Ltd, in which Laing holds the majority stake, won the concession to build, operate and maintain the A55 trunk road across the Island of Anglesey, off North Wales.
The new road is a dual carriageway 32 km in length.

A55 road - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The A55 runs west from its junction with the M53 motorway near Chester, where it is known as the Chester Southerly Bypass, crossing the River Dee and the Welsh border before passing close to Broughton then passing north of Buckley and Northop.
The A55 partly follows the alignment of the Roman road from Chester (Deva) to Caernarfon (Segontium), particularly from Junction 31 to 30 and Junction 13 to 12.
Between Chester and Holywell the alignment of this road is uncertain and between St. Asaph and Aber, the Roman road followed an inland route avoiding the difficulties of the crossing of the Conwy estuary and the cliffs at Penmaenbach and Pen-y-Clip.

 Otters and Roads
The A55 Trunk Road across Anglesey opened in the year 2000 was controversial, particularly with respect to nature conservation and the loss of wildlife habitats and agricultural land.
Despite this apparent conflict the A55 across the island has been successful in the sense that it is an example of how such roads can be built while minimizing the impact and conflict with wildlife.
The A55 was constructed to incorporate a wide range of wildlife mitigation at numerous points along its route, most obvious being the scalloped verges which provide havens for wildlife with their varying widths, profiles and management regimes.

 CBRD - British Roads FAQ
Nearly all public roads have been surfaced since the early part of the 20th century, and the country has a good coverage of purpose-built dual carriageways (divided highways) and motorways (freeways), built from the 1950s onwards.
Older roads are generally well maintained and surfaced, but are rarely widened or re-aligned and often their courses have been unchanged for centuries.
A-roads are the other major routes; they vary from motorway-standard to narrow local roads, and have 1, 2, 3 or 4-digit numbers prefixed with 'A'.

 SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A55
Most of the A55 is grade separated, and the early sections have a general motorway feel - it is easy to forget that fairly recently the A55 was a dog of a road, one long drag through one depressing Welsh village after another (Holywell, Abergele, others with plenty of Llan-whatsits in there).
When the road was dualled, new tunnels were drilled alongside to carry the second carriageway.
Until last year, this was the end of the A55, with the Bangor bypass (a continuation of the A55) taking the A5 number up to Holyhead.

Excessive speed was a factor in almost 30% of road fatalities in the Republic of Ireland between 1996 and 2004 and a factor in 24% of road fatalities between 1996 and 2005 in Northern Ireland.
However, evidence shows that every time human error causes a road collision it is the speed of the vehicles which determines the outcome – whether someone lives or dies, or is maimed for life.
This is the twelfth cross-border road safety campaign commissioned jointly by the Road Safety Authority and the Department of Environment in Northern Ireland.

It is well established that new roads encourage more traffic and Friends of the Earth Cymru have voiced the concerns of many about the numerous environmental consequences of rising traffic levels, such as local air pollution to global warming emissions.
