The Antrim Road was the site of the unbuilt junction 3 included in original plans but probably omitted for a combination of traffic flow and safety reasons (the south facing slips would have been dangerously steep).
The road bridge here along with the adjacent railway bridge were all built wide enough for the motorway to be widened to 3+3 lanes.
Roads Service are planning to construct flyovers directly connecting the M2 to the A12 Westlink in Belfast, and this is likely to take place relatively soon (ie before 2015).

The campaign group in favour of the by-pass, strangely called the 'Siege Committee', argue that the bypass is needed to alleviate the heavy traffic thundering west through the villages from the M1 to the M67.
The new road is essentially needed to separate out traffic, particularly the 40 tonne lorries, from the streets used by local residents.

The A57 Trunk Road from Denton to Mottram-in-Longendale had been seen to be in need of improvement for many years and proposals for its upgrading go back to the inter-War period.
In 1965 the Ministry of Transport asked Sir William Halcrow and Partners to report on a route selected by the County Surveyor of Cheshire and this led, in stages, to the development of the design to partial urban and partial rural motorway standards.
From a grade-separated junction with Manchester Road, Denton, it was to pass through a mainly urban area, to the junction of the A57 and the A560 near Mottram.

Sat in the bowl before the lights leading onto Regent Road, at 5pm, on a Friday, in the rain, you truly, truly feel like you are in the bowels of some kind of beige and stained urban hell.
As for the unfinished bit of slip road you are totally right it doesn't have any point at all, however it was suppose to be the link into the city from A57 (M) but was never completed.
It may be pathetic, it may be a concrete hell, it may have hilarious slip roads that end mid-air and joining/exiting it may not be for those with a nervous disposition, but there's no doubting its importance in Manchester.
