  M6 motorway
The M6 motorway is a motorway in England, United Kingdom.
It is certainly the longest motorway in the country and is often claimed to be the busiest, although the M25 may also lay claim to this dubious distinction, depending on the measurement used.
The first part of the motorway, and indeed the motorway in the country, near Preston was opened by then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on December 5, 1958.

Leeds Inner Ring Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most of it is designated the A58(M), a motorway section of the A58 road, and the rest is the A64(M), part of the A64 road.
Although designated as a motorway, the road has no hard shoulders, and has many exits modern planning would consider unworthy of a motorway, including a right-side (fast lane) slip road exit (taking the eastbound A58 off the motorway).
The motorway was built around the city centre in three stages in the 1960s and 1970s.

The motorway is the most important east-west road in northern England.
The building of the M62 between Rochdale and Huddersfield, crossing the Pennines, is considered to have been one the most daring road construction projects to have taken place in England due to the nature of the terrain.
At the highest point of the motorway, the road divides into two to negotiate the hilly terrain, and a farm, built in 1737, is situated in between the two halves.

In its unfinished state, the top deck exists on the eastbound side, plugging straight in to the A64, but was never built on the westbound side, hence the mismatched motorway status.
Only the left-hand, eastbound carriageway is motorway here; the right-hand one is just A64, as evidenced by the set of lights behind the gantry sign.

The signing on this road is appalling - the City Council (who maintain the road) don't maintain any other motorways, but besides being out of practice, they're also left high and dry by current motorway signage standards, all of which are developed for rural motorways.
Early plans of the route reveal that this was added to save space, the alternative being an exit slip around the outside of the current loop, which would have interfered with the merge from the A660.

The A167(M) Central Motorway through Newcastle has at least two right-handed ``off'' slip roads (the junction with the A1058 is one, and the other is the B1318 I think, as well as several right-hand ``on'' slip roads), so they're not quite so unique as people might have thought!
To be fair, the traffic entering the motorway there does ``get its own lane'' so it isn't forced to merge, but since this slip-road becomes the outside lane of the M60 it's still a bit dodgy when slow vehicles are joining the fray.
