The A590 is a trunk road in southern Cumbria, in the north-west of England, running from M6 junction 36, through the towns of Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness to terminate at Vickerstown on Walney Island.
The road is a mixture of dual carriageway and single carriageway, with the section from the M6 to Low Newton being mainly dual.
The road is the main route for tourists entering the southern Lake District.

 Walk #429: Grange-over-Sands to Ulverston Sands
When the road ends at a junction with the B5277 road turn left down Jack Hill, and at the bottom before the B5277 is reached turn left and follow a footpath southwards across fields.
Once the road is met turn right and follow it northwards for about a hundred yards until it ends at a junction; at this junction turn left and follow this road westwards for a little over a mile until it ends at a T-junction to the south of Flookborough.
When the road turns to the right head left down a track that leads to Sandside; head down this track before taking a footpath that leads off to the left and skirts a farm before heading south before meeting a road beside an old chimney.

The A590 through High Low Newton is probably the most dangerous stretch of the whole A590 Trunk road.
The A590 is a "through route", linking the industrial area of Furness to the rest of the UK.
An improved A590 will help regenerate south Cumbria's economy which is widely recognised as being located far from the city regions of Liverpool and Manchester in north west England.

Just before the road curves to the right a track continues straight on (the course of an old railway), and this can be followed for about half a mile, The path then dives off to the left to meets the cliffs, which it follows around past Westfield Point and back towards the gas terminals.
Continue on down the road through the dockyards until a roundabout is reached; turn right at this roundabout and follow the road around to another roundabout.
Turn left at this roundabout and follow the road across the Jubilee Bridge to Walney Island, and on the other side of the bridge turn left and follow the A590 road southwards; after a few hundred metres it turns to the right to head southwestwards.

 TS381 Ulverston - Trainspots (Ver 1.70 )
Ulverston is on the A590 trunk road from junction 36 of the M6 to Barrow.
The station is to the left of this road as it passes near the town centre, just before it returns briefly to dual-carriageway.
This carries the A590 over the line, so is very busy with traffic, but there is a grass area immediately over the track on the east side from which you can get good shots of the semaphores and signal box as a train leaves for Barrow.

The road begins 3.5 miles north-west of junction 36 of the M6 motorway at a roundabout with the A590 road, close to Sizergh Castle.

A MAJOR trunk road linking South Lakeland and Furness which has claimed dozens of lives over the last 20 years is considered safe by police and highway officials, reports Mike Addison.
But, despite these appeals from A590 campaigners and bereaved families, Cumbria Constabulary's traffic management officer Richard Watt, who has responsibility for trunk roads and motorways in the county, believes drivers to be at fault for most of the accidents that happen on the road.
The section of road between High and Low Newton has long been at the centre of calls for a bypass and Transport Minister John Spellar is expected to make a decision shortly on whether the £11 million project should be included in the Government's trunk road improvement programme.

The A6 being twined with first of all the A591 primary route from Kendal to Sizergh and the A590 Trunk Road from Sizergh to Levens the A591 and A590 numbers taking preference over the A6.

The A590 on the other hand drops downwards, meets the railway line just as it emerges from a short tunnel, and begins a new phase in its life.
My only memory of the A590 is from last year when me and some mates were en route from a blast over Hardknott Pass back towards Morecambe for lunch, but from my "on the ground" sightings it didn't look like the road had changed much west of Low Newton.
The D2 road to the M6 is currently an A590 TOTSO but I've got a feeling it was the A591 before that.

Another thing you haven’t yet seen is a road as filthy, in wet weather, as that between the railway and the A6.
The road here is not well drained and you are liable in wet weather to be wheeling a tortuous route between puddles and dodging the muddy patches near field gates.
The field walls alongside the road are made of the local stone and they continue through a plantation at quite a distance apart, showing that it was originally a wide roadway.
