The original alignment of the A6 was via the now-A5004, a more direct route to Whaley Bridge, but a high level route (which I've never been on), which appears to have some very sharp bends and probably was not suited to being a major trunk route.
Possibly a throwback to the time pre-1971 when this road would have carried masses of traffic between Manchester and all points north, and needed to be a fast road to carry the volume it did.
A short A6 spur joins the M61 at junction 8 - later the A674 was extended to this roundabout to bypass the north of Chorley, but the signs still say A6 west of the roundabout.

This is Audi's new CVT automatic transmission with six steering-wheel-button selectable ratios which first took to the road in the pre-facelift A6 and, of course, the new A4.
For example, the A6 1.9TDI PD 130 manual emits 154g/km CO2 against 164g/km from the Mercedes E220 CDI; 169g/km from the new Volvo S80 DS; and 179g/km from the BMW 525D.
But, having driven the Multitronic in the new A4, I expect the TDI 130 and 2.4 V6 in the A6 to be perfectly suited to it and the automatic choice for many executives.

So then, overambitious claims about `sportiness' aside, the A6 has the space, refinement and `specialness' about its cabin to take the fight straight to BMW, Merc and Jaguar.
