The A66 across the Pennines was subject to a safety study in 2001 and as a result of this the Minister has asked the Highways Agency to work up plans for full dualling.
Congestion on the busiest sections of the region’s strategic road network is one of the biggest problems facing the transport sector in the 21st Century.
The A66 traffic flows are between 65,000 in the Tees Valley area to 13,000 west of the A1.

This small motel stands, as its name implies, on the A66 road, about halfway between Scotch Corner and Barnard Castle and is conveniently situated for travellers on their way to Scotland or the Lakes.
Not so, the A66 Motel, where the only things that appear 20th Century are the modern appointments in the six letting rooms which are all complete with radio and colour television, private bathrooms, with tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryer.
An impression is received that is not your ordinary motel, when one is greeted by a Knight-in-Armour which stands sentinel to the lounge.

The A19 is a major road in England, running parallel to and east of the A1 road.
From here, the village of Eggborough has been bypassed in recent years, with the new road travelling from the roundabout near the power station (there are 3 power stations in a row at this point, running west-east: Ferrybridge, Eggborough, and Drax, with its enormous chimney, to the east).
This road was improved in 1998 by widening from 2 to 3 and 4 lanes each way the four mile section between the Parkway and Norton.

The Road Haulage Association is giving its support to the Temple Sowerby Bypass Action Group, who are holding a ‘Road Crossing’ demonstration on Tuesday 31 August.
For many years, the RHA has been campaigning for the single carriageway sections of the A66 to the east of Penrith to be upgraded to dual carriageway and for the few communities which are still bisected by the road to be bypassed.
RHA Northern Regional Director Geoff Dunning explains: "The RHA is a founder member of the A66 Completion Group and, from a road haulier’s point of view, finishing the job of dualling this road is vitally important.

A REPORT commissioned by Transport 2000 from road safety expert Professor Richard Allsop has concluded that the planned dualling of the A66 across the northern Pennines on safety grounds cannot be justified.
The A66 is one of 33 trunk road corridors that are the subject of Government-funded Multi-Modal and Roads-Based Studies.
The Government’s A66 Safety Study was intended to investigate ways of increasing safety on the road, which is a mixture of dual and single-carriageway sections.

Beyond Keswick the A66 follows the River Derwent all the way to the sea, using the old railway line alongside Bassenthwaite Lake (the only body of water in the Lake District actually has the word "Lake" in its name) and on to Cockermouth, which is also bypassed.
Today the A66 bypasses Penrith but orginally it started near the centre of the small market town and this what in previous centuries made the town an important stagecoach stop in fact one of the streets close but not on the former A66 route is called Old London Road.
It was in 1984 that the villagers blockaded the road in protest at the Government’s scrapping of plans to by-pass this and the similarly afflicted village of Kirkby Thore.

The 50-mile stretch of road is a mixture of old single carriageway sections interspersed with lengths of dual carriageway designed to modern day standards.
There were 48 accidents between 1998 and 2002 on this 8.25km length of road, which has six junctions with the local road network, varies in width and is winding.
This section of the A66, which bypasses Bowes and is situated around the junction of the A67 to Barnard Castle, has a daily traffic flow in excess of 14,500 vehicles, with over 28 per cent heavy goods vehicles.

At Egglescliffe the A67 terminated on the A19, until that road was diverted further east, the original route being renumbered north of Egglescliffe as the A135 (way out of place — it should swap numbers with the A176 in Essex).
Subsequent improvements have taken the A66 away from the original A67 route, notably in Darlington itself, where the original route through the town is now the B6279 (anomalously numbered as it is entirely to the east of the A1).

A66 Speed Traps - This information is based on my experience driving the A66 nearly every day for the past few years.
It is on your left as you come round the corner onto the straight which passes the front of the firing range.
As you crest the top of a small rise in the road the van sits approx 2-300 yards ahead of you on the left hand side in a turning area before the parking area.

The Government claims that dualling is necessary for road safety but Transport 2000 has argued that it is possible to improve safety on the road with much smaller and lower cost measures.
