Jedburgh Area Main Page on Undiscovered Scotland
The Jedburgh Area lies north of the central section of the English border and either side of the A68.
Following the main A68 road from Darlington to Edinburgh you cross the border at Carter Bar and descend towards Jedburgh, Smaller and more traditional in feel than Hawick, Jedburgh is overshadowed by the remarkably complete remains of Jedburgh Abbey, just to the south of the attractive centre of the town.
From here it is possible to follow minor roads that loop round to another of the great border abbeys, Dryburgh Abbey.

A7 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The A7 is a major trunk road in the United Kingdom, that runs south from Edinburgh in Scotland to Carlisle in north-western England.
It then continues through the small town of Longtown, before meeting the A74 road, the A689 road and the M6 motorway at the Greymoorhill Roundabout, which is junction 44 of the M6, and currently the motorway's last junction (although this may change after the M6 is extended northwards to Gretna).
At Hardwicke Circus, a large roundabout junction, the A7 finally terminates, meeting the A6 road (the historic route to London), and the A595 to west and southern Cumbria.

Building new roads outwith the built-up area would fuel pressures for urban dispersal, leading to the location of more facilities in areas where they can be reached only by car, thus exacerbating social exclusion and ultimately increasing traffic congestion.
It is important to avoid any road construction or improvement associated with developments which will to a significant extent cater for increases in traffic unrelated to the development.

JAMES WILLIAM HOGG v. PROCURATOR FISCAL, SELKIRK, 08 December 2000, Lord Allanbridge+Lord Johnston+Lord Prosser
The charge was that on 4 August 1999, on the A68 road between Lauder and Earlston Road, Galadean, the appellant drove a motor car at a speed of 87 m.p.h., contrary to an order made in terms of sections 88 and 89 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
But in relation to any prior physical measurement of the distance between the two painted marks on the road, it was evidently submitted by the appellant's solicitor that both police had conceded under cross-examination that they had never themselves measured the half mile.
Moreover, no evidence was led from any witness who had measured that distance, either when the painted marks were made or subsequently, or indeed prior to this trial, when it was known that there was objection to the certificate which had been lodged.

 SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A68
The A68 is good here, largely realigned, and fast (hence plenty of cameras) passing through Lauder and Earlston, and crossing the Tweed at Leaderfoot by a 70s concrete bridge (the old one still exists, single track with refuges for pedestrians).
Here, the A68 follows Dere Street for the first time, albeit briefly: a straight switchback section of the road leading to the A698 turnoffs (W to Hawick, E to Kelso) to Jedburgh (nice abbey).
Now the A68 descends into Redesdale and thick forest for much of this bit, and remains a mixture of bends and reasonable straight bits, past the Otterburn army training ground and the Brigantium exhibition, which includes a reconstruction of a section of Roman Road.

BACKGROUND 5.1 The Secretary of State announced in his White Paper of July 1998 “A New deal for Trunk Roads” his intention to remove significant sections of the trunk road network in England and Wales, and through a process of detrunking pass to local authorities the responsibility to manage such lengths of road.
The A68 north of the Scottish Border is the responsibility of the Scottish Executive and we are not aware of any current plans to detrunk that part of the A68.
The new Highways Maintenance FSS formula does not provide a good fit with funding for detrunked roads, in addition it is Government’s intention to provide financial certainty to local authorities by keeping the FSS formulae static for a number of years.

The road to Newcastle, by far the larger destination, becomes the A696 at this "totso".
The A68 follows the Roman Dere Street fairly closely down Redesdale, and on to Hadrian's Wall at Corbridge, but the "totso" at which the A696 starts is the result of a short deviation from the Roman route, to allow the A68 to cross the River Rede.
The A696 takes over the trunk road status that the A68 has up to this point, and initially follows the river to Otterburn, where it leaves us to rejoin the A68.
