  SABRE - Road Lists - The First 99 - A71
The A71 is an historic route: it was the major agricultural artery connecting Edinburgh and Ayrshire.
The road then straightens and improves as it enters Livingston and one has more of a sense of its primary status, despite the inevitable, multiple New Town roundabouts (six in the space of about two miles) one of which meets Livingston's main artery, the A899.
The road quietens again after Livingston, passing through a real bottleneck at West Calder (narrow high street, traffic lights) and Breich, beyond which at the junction with the A706 is the always-unusual presence of rural traffic lights.

A71 road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As it climbs the western side of the Clyde Valley on a newly built road, which it shares for a short section with the A72, it commands a view over most of the valley, stretching as far as Coatbridge and the Campsie Hills.
The road descends into the Irvine Valley, passing the weaving towns of Darvel, Newmilns and Galston.
At Darvel, it becomes a Primary Route for the rest of its length to Irvine, and widens slightly, with a straighter alignment until its junction with the A77, south of Kilmarnock.

You also have to get off and walk over the bridge at Ratho Station and there is some new bridge construction at the new World HQ of Royal Bank of Scotland, so not sure of the current position there.
