  CBRD - Histories - B7076 and B7078
A new motorway was constructed parallel to the existing road, leaving the old road to be used as a local access road and one of the carriageways turned into a cycle-path.
There road is passing over a bridge, although this is very difficult to see thanks to all the growth on the northbound carriageway.
The A74 dual carriageway was officially opened in 1973 and some artefacts from the original two lane road remained for some years where the original road was converted into a carriageway for the new road.

Trunk road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most interurban trunk roads are "primary routes", the category of recommended roads for long distance and freight transport, but not all primary routes are trunk roads, the difference being that trunk roads are maintained by central government rather than the local councils.
Trunk roads are often listed on maps with a "T" in brackets after their normal numbers so as to distinguish them from non-trunk parts of the same road.
Although a number of old road signs using these designations may still be encountered, Ireland has long since adopted a newer classification scheme of National Primary and Secondary Routes ("N" roads), Regional roads ("R" roads), and local roads (administratively referred to by "L"-prefixed numbers, though these numbers are not shown on signs).

 CBRD - British Roads FAQ
Older roads are generally well maintained and surfaced, but are rarely widened or re-aligned and often their courses have been unchanged for centuries.
A-roads are the other major routes; they vary from motorway-standard to narrow local roads, and have 1, 2, 3 or 4-digit numbers prefixed with 'A'.
They were downgraded to A-roads in 2000 when the Greater London Authority took control of all roads within its boundaries, with the exception of the M1, M3, M4 and M11 which remain property of the Highways Agency.

The Motorway Archive. Scotland. The background to the Motorway network in Scotland - post 1987.
The commitment to upgrade the A74 was not driven by the growing severe congestion being seen on major motorways and trunk routes south of the Border.
By 1999, it had been established that the A74 upgrading would realistically cost a full £400m and that, even without the A74, the roads programme in preparation was already well in excess of anything that could be funded in a decade.
The new approach insisted that the normal period for a new road to be delivered should be around 6 to 8 years from concept to opening.
