While the section of the A80 which was bypassed by the northern (earlier) section of the M80 is now the A872, the southern section now avoided by the M80 Stepps Bypass remains the A80, although now non primary.
From the SW, the A80 leaves the A8 in the east end of Glasgow at the corner of Alexandra Park, and strikes NE as Cumbernauld Road past Barlinnie prison, crossing the M8 at Junction 12.
A slight incline past Banknock to a slip road for the A803 at junction 4 of the M80...and that's it, the end of the A80.

To provide a systematic and comprehensive approach to road planning the Glasgow City Corporation in 1960 appointed consultants Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick and Co. (Scotland) to prepare a Highway Plan for Glasgow; William Holford and Associates (Glasgow) architects and planning consultants were appointed as part of the design team.
Construction was in stages the first being from Townhead interchange on the inner ring road to Cumbernauld Road (A80), the second from the A80 to Stepps Road and the third from Stepps Road to the city boundary where the motorway joined the trunk road section leading to the Baillieston interchange.
Road construction comprised either a flexible base of bituminous macadam, a concrete base or a regulating concrete layer on rock, the form depending on the type of sub-strata which varied along the length of the Contract.

The road, which has been converted to motorway standard at its beginning and end sections, is one of Scotland's busiest, taking traffic in a north easterly direction from Glasgow, to the new town of Cumbernauld, and then onward to Stirling where it merges with the M9 which eventually becomes the A9 to the North.
Some of this was alleviated in 1992 by building the M80 Stepps bypass at the southern end of the route, but the problems now centre around the Crowwood roundabout near Moodiesburn on the outer periphery of Glasgow.
The troublesome Auchenkilns roundabout in Cumbernauld was finally replaced by a grade separated junction between the A80 and A73 which opened in November 2005, but the widely regarded long term solution to the A80's problems is to replace it entirely with a motorway which will bypass Cumbernauld completely.

Roads bosses have been forced to close part of the A80 Glasgow to Stirling route because of subsidence during work on a new £25million underpass.
Roads campaigners claim the hazardous ground could hamper future work to upgrade the A80 to a motorway.
A decision to close the road was made after talks between the police, AWG and the Scottish Executive.

Approximately £140m is to be spent improving the A80 Glasgow to Stirling trunk road from Stepps to Haggs.
The upgrade to the road, one of the most heavily used in Scotland, will include a 1.6-mile three-lane section between the M73 and Auchenkilns.
He said: "The A80 forms an essential part of the trunk road network between central Scotland and the north east.
