As the road cuts through the north west of the city, it passes through Kelvinside, Anniesland, Clydebank and Dumbarton before turning north to head up the western shore of Loch Lomond.
At Tarbet in Dunbartonshire it splits, leaving the A83 to continue to the west.
Unfortunately, the road is squeezed between railway and loch, with hill sides rising steeply.

The A83 is a major road in Scotland, running from Tarbet on the western shore of Loch Lomond, where it splits from the A82, to Campbeltown at the sourthern end of the Kintyre peninsula.
The current road no longer keeps to the valley floor of Glen Croe but steadily climbs across the southern slopes of The Cobbler to the highest point of the pass.
On reaching the shore of Loch Fyne, the main road follows the east shore of the loch northwards to its head and then goes south south west down the western shore through Inveraray and then on to Lochgilphead and Ardrishaig, where it crosses the entrance to the Crinan Canal.

 Walk #470: Clachan to Furnace
The first parts of the walk follows the A83(T) road southwestwards along the short of Loch Fyne and then around Loch Shira, a total distance of eight miles bringing you to the village of Inveraray.
The road is fairly busy but there are some wide verges, so I did not feel that it was too dangerous.
Continue along this road and when a bridge over Leacann Water is reached cross it and turn slightly to the left to walk through the village.

Bear in mind that if the passing place is on the right and you reach it first, stop on the left side of the road opposite the passing place: pulling across to the right is as good a way to lose your no-claims bonus as any.

This was a long road plod that was made worthwhile by the views over to the Isle of Gigha, the Paps of Jura and Islay.
Head north along the A83; the only diversion that I made off the road was one to the right down a local road to visit Glenbarr Abbey; this road soon rejoins the A83.
Head north along the A83 for many more miles until the village of Clachan is reached; turn left down into the village and then turn left to the campsite in the village, where this walk ends.

Rest and Be Thankful are the words which are located on a stone near the junction of the A83 and the B828, placed there by soldiers who built the original road in 1753.

It had greatness thrust upon it by the construction of the Forth Road Bridge, but when the M9 spur was built the section south of Kirkliston was renumbered back to the B800, leaving the rest of the A8000 (which it provides a link between the M9 and the bridge) high and dry in Zone 9.
There are plans to extend the M9 spur all the way to the bridge, which will allow the replacement of this road entirely.
Part of the Military Road to Fort William, replaced by the present (1920s) route of the A82 - served just three buildings.

This 14 mile stretch of the road is, to say the least, wiggly and it has 107 bends, curves and uncountable number of pot holes.
