  A92 road
The road is a dual carriageway from the M90 to Glenrothes, changing to a single carriageway as it passes through the town.
Across the Tay Road Bridge, the A92 continues along the east coast past Monifieth, Carnoustie, Arbroath, Montrose, Inverbervie and the Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve before terminating at Stonehaven where it merges with the A90 15 miles south of Aberdeen - this section acting mainly as a coastal tourist route for traffic bound for the Granite City.
The 16-mile section of the road from Dundee to Arbroath was recently upgraded to dual carriageway standard; it opened in late 2005 and significantly reduced the journey time between the two towns.

The A9 is a major road running from the Falkirk council area in central Scotland to Thurso in the far north, via Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Perth and Inverness.
At 273 miles, it is the longest road in Scotland and the fifth-longest A-road in the United Kingdom.
The 31 mile section between Bridge of Allan and Inverness, via Perth, was substantially rebuilt during the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, but it follows essentially the same route, except where it skirts towns and villages instead of running through their centres.

When Mr Ogilvie had stood close to the pursuer as he lay at the side of the road, Mr Ogilvie was aware of the smell of drink and there is a notation to similar effect in the hospital records, but there was no indication that he was significantly affected by alcohol.
As far as walking on the road rather than on the verge was concerned, as the pursuer had explained in evidence, he had good reasons for choosing the road.
Having chosen to walk along the carriageway of an A road at night, I consider that the pursuer was bound to walk on the side of the road where he was facing oncoming traffic in order that he be alert to it and able to take avoiding action when necessary.
