The main A96 road between Aberdeen and Inverness was completely closed for almost two hours yesterday morning after lorries jack-knifed when four inches of snow fell on the Glens of Foudland between Inverurie and Huntly.
The road was closed for almost two hours before the lorries could be moved to the side of the road and snowploughs and gritters were able to clear the route for traffic.
A 25 year-old male driver was also taken to hospital with a suspected neck injury after his vehicle crashed in icy conditions on the A952 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh road, near New Leeds, and another motorist was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital after an accident, caused by icy conditions on the A941 between Lossiemouth and Elgin.

The post road that is now known as the A96 was one of the turnpikes that followed in the next 40 years.
The modern A96 follows largely the same route (although the dual carriageway forges a new route in places, the old road can still be followed) from Aberdeen, by Bucksburn, the Tyrebagger Hill, Blackburn to Kintore, then north west by Inverurie, the Glens of Foudland and Huntly and on to Inverness.
Kintore is the home of NECR FM which broadcasts across a large area of Aberdeenshire from its studios on School Road.
