Submarines of the E, H, K, L, M, N, O and R classes ranged in displacement from 287 to 510 tons, with the fastest boats displaying a top surface speed of barely 14 knots on diesel power.
Submarines played a variety of roles in the war effort, demonstrating the versatility of stealth.
In the fast attack submarine USS Skipjack (SSN 585) the endurance of nuclear propulsion and the high speed of the Albacore teardrop hull came together to form the new paradigm.

Submarine Division 20 was formed at San Diego in the mid-1920s to provide a “home” for the new V-class submarines commissioned during that period.
These notional “fleet” submarines would necessarily be larger and better armed, but primarily, they would need a surface speed of some 21 knots to be able to maneuver with the battleships and cruisers of the line.
Note: See “The Submarine Heritage of Simon Lake” in the Fall 2002 issue of UNDERSEA WARFARE.] The nine “fleet boats” became the V class, built between 1921 and 1934, and in fact, they were the only U.S. submarines produced for a decade that began in the early 1920s.

Early in 1916, Congress had passed an act calling for the enlargement of the fleet to comprise enough warships to be able to deal with all foes, in the words of the time, a "fleet second to none".
Otherwise similar, the new class was sufficiently close to the previously built destroyer that there were few problems with the yards that were to build the ships.
In the late 1920s, those Wickes class ships built to the Bethlehem design (a total of 60) were scrapped as their Yarrow-type boilers were used up and re-boilering them was a pointless endeavour.

The AA-1 class was a class of three experimental submarines of the United States Navy, built toward the end of World War I, between 1916 and 1919.
These notional "fleet" submarines would necessarily be larger and better armed, but primarily, they would need a surface speed of some 21 knots (39 km/h) to be able to maneuver with the battleships and cruisers of the line.
In the ensuing authorization of eight submarines, Congress specified that one should "be of a seagoing type to have a surface speed of not less than twenty knots." This first fleet boat, laid down in June 1916, was named Schley after Spanish-American War hero Winfield Scott Schley.

When, in the 1930s, it was desired to design a submarine to operate with and scout for the main battle fleet, it had to make economically at least eighteen knots on the surface.
From a Cold War level of one hundred or so attack submarines, the present level is about fifty and is falling—in spite of the fact that SSN taskings by fleet and national commanders have essentially doubled.
Not only does just one submarine represent a credible military force, but it is also capable of surviving and operating independently anywhere in the world, including ocean areas as shallow as twenty fathoms, to which access has been restricted or denied to other platforms.

List of submarine classes of the United States Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Submarines of the United States Navy are built in classes, using a single design for a number of boats.
Occasionally, a class will consist of a single ship as a prototype, or for experimental use; an example is USS Albacore (AGSS-569), which used an unprecedented hull design.
This was a two ship class intended to prototype small submarines for wartime use due to the (false) belief that larger submarines could not be mass produced.
