  Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence
Founded in 1979, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) (formerly the American Association for Artificial Intelligence) is a nonprofit scientific society devoted to advancing the scientific understanding of the mechanisms underlying thought and intelligent behavior and their embodiment in machines.
AAAI also aims to increase public understanding of artificial intelligence, improve the teaching and training of AI practitioners, and provide guidance for research planners and funders concerning the importance and potential of current AI developments and future directions.
Major AAAI activities include organizing and sponsoring conferences, symposia, and workshops, publishing a quarterly magazine for all members, publishing books, proceedings, and reports, and awarding grants, scholarships, and other honors.

I saw some great research at both, although I think what I saw last year was slightly better overall (although that may just have been due to the sample that I got).
One nice side effect was that it increased a lot the number of people I knew at the conference and I made many new contacts through the new friends from the AAAI DC.
The highlight of AAAI this year was the Doctoral Consortium.

Following are the teams have have registered for the 2002 AAAI Robot Competition and Exhibition.
This year's goal is to integrate software from the various institutions onto a common hardware platform and attempt to do the complete AAAI Robot Challenge task autonomously, from beginning to end.
Our exhibition will introduce RoboCupJunior to the AAAI audience, in search of mentors for teams of young students as well as educators looking for a new twist on standard undergraduate curriculum.
