Objective Individual Combat Weapon program - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The Objective Individual Combat Weapon or OICW refers to the next-generation service rifle competition that was under development as part of the United States Army OICW program.
Increment 1 (OICW 1) was a competition for a whole weapon system family similar to the XM8.
OICW Increment 2 was a stand-alone airburst weapon (the (XM25).

OICW is an expensive purchase because we already have excellent, combat proven 5.56mm firing M16A2 Assault Rifles and M4 Carbines that can be fitted with all the electronic "bells and whistles" anyone could ever want.
The OICW does not use a proximity fuse, it uses a timed fuse which is programmed to blow up in the proximity of the target.
The original prototype of the OICW weighed 18 pounds, which the Army said was too heavy for an infantrymans personal weapon, she noted.

The Objective Individual Combat Weapon (www.combatsim.com)
The OICW is a two barreled over-under weapon that includes a 5.56mm select-fire rifle of fairly conventional design with an advanced semi-auto 20mm bullpup magazine-fed grenade launcher.
The OICW features an infrared scope that operates without cooling, making it light and simple enough to be a standard feature (or at least an easily added module).
The old M16 curse of the "Mattel rifle" may be brought back on the OICW, but if the interface is built ruggedly enough, this kind of flexibility would be a boon, allowing it to replace the M4 carbine, M16, and M203 with one modular system at a single stroke.

AAI and Springfield Armory are instructed to submit ten 'second generation' prototypes apiece for a rerunning of the Phase I evaluation process.
AAI finally had a major sales success in the M203 40mm grenade launcher in 1968; this along with continued subsidies from the Army allowed AAI to continue developing their SPIW prototypes.

OICW is a combination of a 5.56mm rifle, (minus the buttstock) a 20mm grenade launcher and a ballistic sight.
Employment of the OICW is said to be 'light and special forces infantry units' and/or replacing the M16/M203 2 per infantry squad (1 per 4 man fireteam).
A decent 2300 OICW is a GW-12 bullpup derivative, with a SK-19 or FAM-90 rifle (minus the stock).

The other part of the project is continuing as Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) Increment 1, which is a competition for a whole weapon system family similar to the XM8.
OICW Increment 2 is the airburst weapon (the (XM25).

Recently I've learnt that during the SPIW trials AAI experimented with a similar idea.
It seems that it didn't occur to AAI to use a spigot based system which is surprising since successful spigot weapons date back to at least the Second World War, the most well known being the PIAT and Hedgehog.

This is the French equivalent to the OICW, PAPOP stands for "PolyArme, POlyProjectiles.
Work has been done by GIAT and FN, among others (FN was a partner in the AAI proposal for the OICW.) The PAPOP uses a 35mm round because the French believe a smaller round cannot be effective.
The 200 g round must have a lower muzzle velocity than the 20 mm OICW, and thus a shorter range (although the attention to recoil abatement suggest a much higher veloity than the 40mmx26R).

I hadn't heard that the OICW had been shelved, i thought it was only in the opening stages of development, and that it would be issued in about 2025 as part of the land warrior program...
i reckon for the airsoft oicw is to use mini-moscarts, and than use the gas they expel to work the action, like a gbb but on a larger scale.

Eventually, in 1989, four candidate weapons were tested, from Heckler and Koch of Germany, Colt and AAi Corporation of the USA and the Steyr-Mannlicher of Austria.
The AAI rifle, compared to some of the others, looks quite conventional, but it actually fires fin-stabilized Flechettes, dart-like projectiles, at the high velocity of 1400 m/s and cannot fire conventional ammunition.
The Flechette idea is not new, several makers, including AAI, experimented with Flechettes as rifle projectiles in the 1960s, but at the time the materials and construction of the Flechette cartridge was not particularly good.

Best Assault Rifles That Never Were
The OICW bears no resemblance to any assault rifle, having a 20mm grenade launcher and a 5.56N carbine, as well as newly-designed optics which greatly-increase hit probability, and a computer-controlled 20mm round which is designed to shower enemy soldiers hiding behind cover with shrapnel.
The OICW’s sight is equivalent to both an image intensifier and a starlight scope, as well as being an electronic sight.
Though it was given the designation of XM-29 (and supposedly later to become the M-29), the troops testing the OICW reportedly didn't like the beastly weight of the weapon and the fragility of its internal computer and its optics.

This was the result of a DOD contract in which AAI was asked in May of 1956 to began a study on the effectiveness of flechettes.
Nine months later, AAI's study concluded a.65 gram(10 grain) flechette fired at 1220 meters per second(4000 feet per second) had the same effectiveness as the 9.8 gram(150 grain) bullet fired from the M1 Rifle.
By the way, for those of you who do not know, the purpose of the OICW project is to develop a rifle capable of firing conventional 5.56mm ammunition with a new breed of 20mm "smart" air-bursting grenades.
