  Air Accidents Investigation Branch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AAIB was established in 1915 as the Accidents Investigation Branch (AIB) of the Royal Flying Corps.
Captain C B Cockburn was appointed "Inspector of Accidents" for the RFC, reporting directly to the Director General of Military Aeronautics in the War Office.
AAIB administrative staff are part of the Department for Transport (DfT) and are recruited according to civil service guidelines.

The AAIB shall operate autonomously and independently from public authorities and shall in its investigations be independent of other investigating parties, a prosecuting authority, and courts.
The report shall detail the cause or probable cause of the aircraft accident as well as provide recommendations for safety measures that may be taken to avoid further accidents due to the same or similar causes or to reduce their consequences.
Under special circumstances, the AAIB is authorised to issue a statement on the conclusion of an investigation or to complete an investigation of a case with the statement of an opinion instead of issuing a report.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) report into the crash landing at Aberdeen Airport on Christmas Eve 2002 by a mail plane has suggested that 'a lack of adherence to the JAR-OPS conversion requirements may have been partly responsible' for the procedures the pilots followed.
Another AAIB report, published at the same time, regarding the plane crash of a Cessna 172N off the Scilly Isles on 4 October last year, revealed that the aircraft may simply have run out of fuel.
On the day of the flight one of the passengers, a pilot, checked the fuel tanks and estimated that they were three quarters full.

The AAIB highlights similar failures with the BA flight from Gatwick to Antigua in June of the same year, when the craft lost an under-wing maintenance door in mid-flight.

The court heard that a complex formula used to calculate 'blast wave effects' after an explosion was incorrectly applied in the AAIB's 1990 report on the disaster.
The calculation was used to determine the exact whereabouts of the initial spark, and the AAIB expert admitted in court this morning that the bomb which destroyed the Boeing 747 might have exploded closer to the fuselage skin than originally thought.
Much of the prosecution's case rests on a link between the two suspects and the supposed location of the bomb, inside a suitcase in a luggage container, and the defence team is hoping to cast doubts over the supposed point of detonation.
