Managing AAL5 in a Switch Managing AAL5 in a switch involves: (1) performance management of an AAL5 entity as an internal resource in a switch (2) performance management of AAL5 per virtual connection AAL5 in a switch is modeled as shown in Figures 4 and 5.
AAL5 will be managed in a switch for only those virtual connections that carry AAL5 and are terminated at the AAL5 entity in the switch.
AAL5 Connection Performance Statistics Group An AAL5 connection table is used to provide AAL5 performance information for each AAL5 virtual connection that is terminated at the AAL5 entity contained within an ATM switch or host.

In the case of AAL5 the third bit of the PTI field shall be inverted on the last cell to indicate the end of a CPCS-PDU.
In VCs using AAL5 the cell payloads associated with a particular CIF header shall all belong to the same CPCS-PDU, and the last cell payload of the CPCS-PDU may be included in the same group as cell payloads that are not the last by using the format 2 Payload Type Toggle Indication flag.
The format 2 AAL5 CRC validity indication flag may be set by the end system in a CIF header that is associated with the cell payload containing the end of an AAL5 CPCS-PDU and thus the CRC-32 field.

ATM Adaptation Layer 5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AAL5 generates a trailer, divides the information into 48-octet pieces, and transfers each piece across the ATM network in a single cell.
The AAL5 layer is classified as end-to-end because the layering principle applies from the source to the destination - AAL5 presents the receiving software with data in exactly the same size blocks as the application passed to the AAL5 on the sending end.
At the receiving end, AAL5 reassembles the cells, checks the CRC to verify that no bits were lost or corrupted, extracts the datagram, and passes it to the IP layer.

AAL5, ATM Adaptation Layer 5   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
AAL5 adapts multi-cell higher layer PDUs into ATM with minimal error checking and no error detection.
AAL5 is the adaptation layer for UNI signaling, ILMI, PNNI signaling, and for IP PDUs.
The first is the encapsulation, on the transmit side, and de-encapsulation, on the receive side, of the higher layer PDU into the AAL5 CPCS PDU which requires the computation of the length and the CRC-32.

 Cells-In-Frames: A System Overview
Option B proposes splitting the ATM AAL5 layer such that the CPCS function is provided by code residing in the workstation, and the SAR sublayer functions are provided by the ATM adapter hardware within the CIF switch.
If an AAL5 PDU is large enough to span multiple Ethernet frames, a workstation must be able to interrupt the transmission of the series of frames containing the AAL5 payloads in order to transmit a frame containing an AAL1 payload.
An ATM AAL5 cell is received where the PTI value in the ATM header indicates the last cell of the AAL5 PDU.

Introduction PPP over AAL5 [2] describes the encapsulation format and operation of PPP when used with the ATM AAL5 adaptation layer.
PPP over AAL2 addresses the bandwidth efficiency issues of PPP over AAL5 for small packet transport by making use of the AAL2 Common Part Sublayer (CPS) [4] to allow multiple PPP payloads to be multiplexed into a set of ATM cells.
Also, there may be a significant delay incurred while the AAL5 layer waits for many ATM cell arrival times until a full frame has been assembled before the full frame is passed up to the PPP Multiplexing layer where the inverse PPP demux then occurs.

AAL5 Frame Reassembly using VPI, VCI and the PTI fields of the ATM Header
AAL5 makes use of the ``end of SAR-SDU'' indication, which is carried as a value 1 in the lowest bit of the ATM layer user to ATM layer user indication bit field of the PTI field in the ATM header to indicate whether a cell is the last in a frame
AAL5 also assumes that cells for a given frame will not be interspersed with cells for another frame within the same VP/VC pair.

LLC Encapsulated L2TP over AAL5 When LLC encapsulation is used, the payload field of the AAL5 CPCS PDU SHALL be encoded as shown in Figure 1.

ATM AAL5 SAR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The AAL5 SAR (segmentation and re-assembly) segments a convergence sublayer protocol data unit (CS_PDU) into asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells at the transmitting side and reassembles ATM cells into a CS_PDU at the receiving side.
ATM cells are transmitted from the Atlantic interface; the re-assembly circuit receives ATM cells from the Atlantic interface.
The AAL5 SAR can handle 512 VCs simultaneously without modification and can handle an arbitrary number of VCs with additional content-addressable memory (CAM) support.
