Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics and You - Timeline - Ernst Abbe
Abbe studied physics and mathematics as an undergraduate at the University of Jena and went to graduate school at the University of Göttingen, where he received a doctorate in thermodynamics.
According to Abbe, a detail with a particular spacing in the specimen is resolved when the numerical aperture (NA) of the objective lens is large enough to capture the first-order diffraction pattern produced by the detail at the wavelength employed.
Ernst Abbe demonstrated that if a grating is employed for a specimen and its conoscopic image is examined at the rear aperture of the objective lens with the condenser aperture closed to a minimum, an orderly series of images of the condenser iris opening is observed.

 Abbe biography
Abbe studied at the University of Jena and the University of Göttingen, receiving his doctorate from Göttingen in 1861 with a dissertation on thermodynamics.
Abbe was appointed professor of physics and mathematics at Jena in 1870 and, in 1878, he was appointed director of the astronomical observatory at Jena and of the meteorological observatory at Jena.
Other optical advances which Abbe made include a clearer theoretical understanding of limits to magnification and the discovery the Abbe sine condition, as it is called today, which gives conditions on a lens for it to form a sharp image, without the defects of coma and spherical aberration.

 Abbé de Nantes
The Abbé de Nantes is a Catholic priest and theologian who believes that the new "orientations" of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), upheld and further developed by Popes Paul VI and John Paul II, have been an unmitigated disaster for the Church.
The Abbé Georges de Nantes was born on 3 April 1924 in Toulon (France), the third of five children born to a naval officer.
For the Abbé de Nantes and his followers, it was quite obvious in 1980 that the much-desired renaissance of the Roman Church was conclusively compromised by the new Pope.

NOAA History - Profiles in Time/NWS Biographies - Prof. Cleveland Abbe
It was largely owing to Professor Abbe's advice that General Myer, the Chief Signal Officer, sought the cooperation of foreign governments and of the International Meteorological Congress of 1873 in establishing the "Daily Bulletin of Simultaneous International Meteorological Observations," and Professor Abbe took a leading part in organizing this remarkable enterprise.
Professor Abbe never ceased to urge the importance of meteorological research, and he organized a branch of the Central Office, known at first informally, and later officially, as the "study room," in which many fruitful investigations were carried out.
Professor Abbe's life was one of unusual simplicity and devotion to science, especially to meteorology and climatology, although the early years of his manhood were occupied with astronomical work in which he gained much distinction.

In physics and optics, the Abbe number, also known as the V-number or constringence of a transparent material, is a measure of the material's dispersion (variation of refractive index with wavelength).
Abbe numbers are only a useful measure of dispersion for visible light, and for other wavelengths, or for higher precision work, the group velocity dispersion is used.
Abbe numbers are used to calculate the necessary focal lengths of achromatic doublet lenses to minimize chromatic aberration.
