ABC Local Radio is a network of publicly-owned radio stations in Australia, operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
ABC Local Radio stations were the first established by the ABC.
Originally Local Radio was known internally as ABC Radio 1 in metropolitan regions and ABC Radio 3 in regional areas, but, in the 1980s, Radio 1 became Metro (Metropolitan) Radio and Radio 3 became Regional Radio.

Years of ABC bashing by the government has seen the ABC rounds reporters hugely reluctant to criticise the government - the David Flint case is the one recent exception but that was simply too outrageous to ignore.
Seems to me that ABC could be perceived as being tough on the Howard government - but I sense that is mostly due to the depth of its coverage - it is the only TV station that actually drills down into government pronouncements or doesn't allow ministers to slide away with glib announcements.
Leading up to a very crucial election, there is naturally a lull in bias at the ABC to position themselves to be relevant enough to at least be granted an interview or two with a right winger, even if their true reason is to rip the guts out of them once in the studio.

The movement to introduce low-power radio stations onto the FM dial in urban areas got a boost Friday from two powerful senators who introduced a bill allowing federal regulators to license small stations.
The new legislation (PDF) seeks to undo an appropriations rider passed in December 2000 by Congress, which was persuaded by large commercial broadcasters that local radio would likely interfere with their radio signals.
Community radio activists hope the bill will eventually lead to a flowering of small broadcasters in urban areas where the radio spectrum is dominated by large commercial stations.

Radio personality Adam Spencer will take over from Julie McCrossin as presenter of Sydney ABC local radio's breakfast shift.
"Adam is well known to 702 listeners and audiences across Australia and I know they'll appreciate and enjoy his sharp wit, creative intelligence and warm energy as they start their day with him," ABC local radio manager Roger Summerill said.
